Chapter Nine

Nick lingered at the side entrance to the hotel and watched Cavendish and Pike as they strolled from the Seascape. He ducked inside as they passed, entering the lobby then proceeding to the bar. Nick peeked around the corner, seeing them get seated at a corner table. The crowd was small and being entertained by live piano music, punctuated by muted laughter and conversation. He waited until their drinks were served then approached their table with a smile.

“Good evening. This is a pleasant surprise, running into you two again.”

“Well,” Fred Pike said with a smile and a gleam in his eyes. “If it isn’t our friend who loses boats at night. How are ya?”

“Better than the last time you saw me.”

Tom Cavendish indicated an empty chair. “Join us for a drink.”

Nick sat. “Only if you let me buy the next round. It’s the least I can do for picking me up.”

Cavendish waved him off. “No trouble. Were they able to salvage your boat?”

“No, it’s a loss.” He shrugged. “Easy come, easy go.”

He laughed. “Good attitude.”

The server came to the table to take his order then returned in a few minutes.

Cavendish sipped his drink. “What line of work are you in, Mr. Coburn?”

“Insurance claims adjuster in Miami. I’m here on vacation.”

“I’ve often wondered aboot that,” Cavendish said.

“About what?”

“Aboot where Floridians go on vacation. You’re in the Sunshine State already, so why leave?”

Nick chuckled. “A lot of us are transplanted snowbirds from up north and we enjoy a change of scenery.” He paused. “Sort of like Canadians who flock there every winter to escape the snow.”

“He’s got us there, Tom,” Pike offered. “As a society we’ve all become like geese, blindly playin’ follow the leader. Whatever happened to independence?”

Cavendish exhaled heavily. “You startin’ up with that again? We’re on holiday. No political commentary.”

Nick sipped his Scotch. “What do you do in Halifax?”

Cavendish eyed him warily. “Who said we did anything up there?”

“You did, when you picked me up last night. You said you were business partners.”

Cavendish relaxed. “We export fish and caviar. Thrilling stuff.”

“Sounds profitable.”

“Yeah, but very taxing,” Pike said. “The markets the way they are, they’re up, they’re down.” He shook his head. “Stressful.”

“I guess that would cause some sleepless nights.” He sipped his drink. “Are you staying at the hotel?”

“No,” Cavendish answered. “We brought a yacht down here, the Seascape.”

Nick’s eyebrows arched. “That big boat in the marina?”

“Yeah, that’s the one. You’ve seen her?”

“Hard not to. How does she handle the open water?”

“You’d never know you weren’t on land.”

“How many does it sleep?”

“Four comfortably, six if you don’t mind usin’ sleepin’ bags.”

Nick sipped his Scotch. “Never been aboard a boat that big. Wouldn’t mind seeing it sometime.”

Cavendish eyed him for a moment. “Maybe some time.”

“Any luck with the fishing?”

Pike snorted. “No. Colossal waste of time. Only hooked a few trout and catfish. Nothin’ I can mount over my fireplace, that’s for sure.”

“Yeah, but those fish will taste fine come this winter when the prices go up,” Cavendish said. “You’re always lookin’ at the down side of things, Fred.
