As well as scattering food around your hamster’s cage to encourage foraging, you can hide food in tunnels and small boxes, which will also make mealtimes more interesting for them.

Weight watch

It is a good idea to keep a careful eye on your hamster’s weight. You can help your hamster to maintain a healthy weight by limiting treats – especially sweet ones such as apple and carrot – and by ensuring that they are not over-fed. It is important to remember that young hamsters and pregnant and nursing females will have different needs to other hamsters. Ask your vet for advice on how to give your hamster a balanced diet and whether you need to adjust their food to help them to achieve a healthy weight.
