Alex parked across the street from Tessaâs house. I watched as he walked her up to the door, and the two of them stood talking for what seemed like hours. I was getting pretty bored, when Alex said something to make Tessa laugh. Then he moved in even closer and took one of her hands. I perked right up because I knew he was going to kiss her, and I figured when it came to moments like these, I needed all the instruction I could get.
He had to bend down quite a bit before he could make contact. He put one arm around her, and then he put his other hand kind of on her cheek and up into her hair, and by the time he kissed her, she looked like she was ready to melt into a big puddle on the step.
Man, he was smooth.
And yet, sadly, not quite smooth enough.
Theyâd made contact for about five seconds when the front door flung open to reveal Sheri. At least, I think it was Sheri. It was hard to tell. She was in her bathrobe, with a towel around her head and what looked like green goop all over her face.
She wagged her finger at Alex, and he jumped away from Tessa with his hands up like heâd just been caught trying to shoplift her. Then Sheri dragged Tessa into the house, and Tessa barely had time to wave goodbye before Sheri slammed the door in Alexâs face.
He stood on the stoop for a moment, staring in shock at the closed door. Then it opened, and his jacket came flying out. He shook his head while he picked it up and jogged back to the car. He had a big grin on his face.
âThat was awkward,â I said as I climbed into the front seat.
âPlease,â he said. âYou crapped in your pants at the movie theater and popped a raging boner in the middle of a crowded Dairy Queen. If there was a prize for awkward this evening, Iâd say you won it, Skidmark.â
He glanced over at Tessaâs house one last time and then pulled away from the curb.
âSo whoâs the girl?â he asked.
âSheâs no one,â I said quickly. âForget it.â
âAre you telling me this happens whenever you make the slightest physical contact with any girl? Do I need to start carrying a bucket of water around with me whenever weâre out together?â He looked over at me.
âNo! Everything is under control.â
âSo who is she?â
Her name is Claudia. Iâm going to marry her one day, and our children will be in the Olympics.
âSheâs just a girl,â I said. I stared at the dashboard as if my life depended on it. âJust a girl I kind ofâlike. I wasnât expecting to see her tonight, thatâs all.â
âDoes she go to your dance school too?â
I glared at him because I thought he might be making fun of me, but he was looking at me like he expected a real answer.
âNo,â I said. âShe works at the Czech bakery.
