Chapter Thirteen

“journeys end in lovers meeting.”

Godiva and Alice and I pulled into the lot at six thirty the next morning. We had coffee and bagels with us. Pretty much everything else was already there—we had received the masks, hardhats, and glasses, as well as a selection of crowbars and a couple of rolling trash carts. And the tables and ice chests, of course.

We also had picked up a security guard, a blue metal boy named Chip. He walked up to the lot just after four yesterday and told us that Agony had sent him. He was still there in the morning and unlocked the gate and pulled it back.

“Okay to take off, boss?” he asked.

“Sure, Chip,” I told him. “Quiet night?”

“Like the grave,” he said.

“Do you need a ride?” Godiva called as he started walking away.

He smiled. “Thanks, but I'll walk.” He eyed Godiva's car. “I'd trash your suspension inside a block.”

I set up the tables and Godiva arranged the buckets of food and containers of coffee. Alice hadn't seen the boat before, she went up close and studied it. “You've got your work cut out for you,” was her opinion.

I opened up the trailer and started getting the gear ready. Despite Ex's enthusiasm, I had some serious misgivings about an untrained crew running around below decks with tools.

Agony showed up next, pulling her red Italian rocket ship neatly into the space next to Godiva's car. She was in jeans and T-shirt—red jeans, red T-shirt, but still it was the first time I'd seen her in pants. She hopped out of her car and smiled around at all of us. “Alice,” she called, “how do you like my boat?”

“Needs work,” Alice said simply.

Agony grinned, “That's why we're here!” She rubbed her hands together. “This is going to be fun!”

Okay, then. I got the box of hardhats out of the trailer and put it next to the bagel table.

Agony said, “Oh, I got some markers!” she leaned into her car and brought out a small box.

I shot Godiva a look. She shrugged.

Agony grabbed a hardhat from the box and opened the box of markers. “For decorating the hardhats,” she explained, as if it should have been obvious.

She took a marker in each hand—red in her left, black in her right—and bent over the hardhat on the table. She started drawing with both hands at once, then swapped the markers and finished the design. She capped the markers and held her artwork up proudly.

The hardhat was covered with roses, with the name Agony spelled out in thorny stems on both sides. It didn't look like the work of a minute with some markers, it looked like an airbrush painting that someone had spent hours on.

“You're quite the artist,” Alice said softly.

Agony waved the complement away, “Oh, I just like to draw.” She handed out hardhats to Alice, Godiva, and I.

Alice took a marker and wrote her name in block letters across the side. Godiva chewed on her lip for a moment and started drawing.
