CHAPTER TWELVE

Nora and Jason flanked Tom Treadwell as they escorted him into the nerve center of FBI headquarters, their presence drawing the attention of fellow agents and law enforcement personnel. The atmosphere around them was tense as they walked, charged with a mix of anticipation and curiosity as their colleagues watched them make their way to an interrogation room.

Tom, their captive, walked between them, his demeanor sullen, his shoulders rolling in and his feet shuffling as if he was trying to prolong their journey for as long as possible.

As they approached their destination, Nora felt a surge of determination wash over her, the fire of justice burning bright within her soul. They had come too far to falter now, too many lives depended on their success. With a steady hand and unwavering resolve, Nora and Jason pushed forward, ready to face whatever challenges awaited them in the heart of law enforcement headquarters.

The prying eyes from behind the mirrored glass intensified the already palpable tension as Nora and Jason sat down across from Tom in the claustrophobic confines of the interrogation room. Every step they took felt like a weighty march towards the heart of their investigation, the air thick with anticipation and uncertainty.

As they crossed the threshold into the dimly lit room, Nora couldn’t shake the feeling of being under scrutiny from the unseen observers behind the mirrored glass. Their presence loomed large, a constant reminder of the high stakes of their interrogation. The room itself seemed to close in around them, the walls pressing in like silent witnesses to the drama unfolding within. The harsh fluorescent lighting cast stark shadows, adding to the oppressive atmosphere that hung heavy in the air.

Tom, their captive, remained silent and stoic as they seated him at the table, his eyes flickering with anxiety as he met Nora’s gaze. It was clear that he knew the gravity of the situation, that there was nowhere for him to run this time.

With a deep breath, Nora squared her shoulders and locked eyes with Tom, ready to begin the intense questioning that lay ahead. It was a battle of wills, a high-stakes game of cat and mouse that would ultimately determine the fate of their investigation. And as she prepared to dive into the murky depths of Tom’s psyche, Nora knew that there was no turning back now.

Beneath the harsh, unforgiving lights of the interrogation room, Nora initiated her questioning of Tom.

“How well did you know Diane Rourke?” she asked.

“Who?” he shrugged.

Nora saw a hint of recognition flash across his face when she said the third victim’s name. She could tell he knew her, but he was playing dumb like he didn’t.

“Diane Rourke. She went to Wyman. Didn’t you also go to Wyman?”

“Years ago.”

“Good. You do know how this works. I’m going to ask more questions, and you’re going to answer them. Understand?” Nora asked, although she really didn’t care what his answer was. There was no room for evasion anymore.

“Yeah.”

“How well did you know Diane Rourke?” she asked again.
