Nine:
Her English class had barely let out when Darla arrived. Page also arrived, with Ryan. Kaylee was greeted by her three closest people at the same time. Her worlds were literally colliding.
âHey, Kay, whose this?â
Ryan asked and Kaylee hummed and waved her hand in Darlaâs direction.
âThis is Darla, Darla, my friends Page and Ryan.â
The master vampiress smiled, her fangs well hidden from prying human eyes. The four large fangs the vampires possess are fully retractable into the gums. They are as stealth a predator as any other immortal, until they decide to bite.
âNice to meet ye both. Kayleeâs told me all about ye lot.â
Darla said, and she saw the usual American enlargement of the pupils once hearing her English-English accent. Theyâd never believe she was âtoning it down.â
âDid you come to the US for school?â
Page asked and Darla nodded and said, âAye, itâs one of the main reasons I came here. I also came for the beer.â
She grinned and Kaylee snorted, recognizing the English joke.
âAmerican beer is weak and often ridiculed in Britain.â
Ryan said, getting the joke.
âVery good, mate. You didnât take no time to catch that one.â
âIt helps that Iâve been to London several times. Iâve drank in pubs and bars. The very first thing most the bar tenders will say to me is, âThis isnât that weak piss yer lot drink, son.â So it wasnât hard to guess your meaning.â
Darla laughed and her heart ached for her cold and foggy English wintersâthough many considered the weather less than desirable. Home is home no matter how long you live to explore the known worlds. Some siren call will always attempt to lure you to return to the shores of your birth.
Kaylee mused, thinking about this. She didnât miss Atlanta per-se, but her reasons for self-imposed exile were drastic. Darla could return to London, if she desired, but it was co-inhabited with Oligarchy echelons as well. Sheâd be in a far more vulnerable position. Kaylee realized they shared in common another truth. Neither of them could reasonably return home.
That was a chilling feeling, even though Kaylee was hardly old-enough to grow home sick in any serious way. The knowing her banishment was likely permanent with an indeterminate period separating her from the south, Kaylee would be left to the cold of the north-lands with the Consortium, but not one of them.
In many ways, her predicament was crueler and more isolating.
âWhat do you say, we should all go unwind!?â
Page asked in a giddy tone and Ryan smiled as his eyes remained glued to the beautiful Bostonian heiress.
âIâm down, even if the beer is weak.â
âAs long as they have Guinness on tap, ye can count me in.â
Darla said and Page turned and gave Kaylee a doe-eyed sullen look.
âCome on Kay⦠You know you can use a drink after the shenanigans the cops just put you through.â
âPage, we werenât supposed to say that!â
Ryan snapped lowly, but everyone could hear the not-whisper-whisper.
âItâs fine, I am down, but shouldnât we at least finish our classes?â
âYouâre such a girl-scout!â
âI wish Iâd been a girl-scout.
