Nine:

Her English class had barely let out when Darla arrived. Page also arrived, with Ryan. Kaylee was greeted by her three closest people at the same time. Her worlds were literally colliding.

“Hey, Kay, whose this?”

Ryan asked and Kaylee hummed and waved her hand in Darla’s direction.

“This is Darla, Darla, my friends Page and Ryan.”

The master vampiress smiled, her fangs well hidden from prying human eyes. The four large fangs the vampires possess are fully retractable into the gums. They are as stealth a predator as any other immortal, until they decide to bite.

“Nice to meet ye both. Kaylee’s told me all about ye lot.”

Darla said, and she saw the usual American enlargement of the pupils once hearing her English-English accent. They’d never believe she was “toning it down.”

“Did you come to the US for school?”

Page asked and Darla nodded and said, “Aye, it’s one of the main reasons I came here. I also came for the beer.”

She grinned and Kaylee snorted, recognizing the English joke.

“American beer is weak and often ridiculed in Britain.”

Ryan said, getting the joke.

“Very good, mate. You didn’t take no time to catch that one.”

“It helps that I’ve been to London several times. I’ve drank in pubs and bars. The very first thing most the bar tenders will say to me is, “This isn’t that weak piss yer lot drink, son.” So it wasn’t hard to guess your meaning.”

Darla laughed and her heart ached for her cold and foggy English winters—though many considered the weather less than desirable. Home is home no matter how long you live to explore the known worlds. Some siren call will always attempt to lure you to return to the shores of your birth.

Kaylee mused, thinking about this. She didn’t miss Atlanta per-se, but her reasons for self-imposed exile were drastic. Darla could return to London, if she desired, but it was co-inhabited with Oligarchy echelons as well. She’d be in a far more vulnerable position. Kaylee realized they shared in common another truth. Neither of them could reasonably return home.

That was a chilling feeling, even though Kaylee was hardly old-enough to grow home sick in any serious way. The knowing her banishment was likely permanent with an indeterminate period separating her from the south, Kaylee would be left to the cold of the north-lands with the Consortium, but not one of them.

In many ways, her predicament was crueler and more isolating.

“What do you say, we should all go unwind!?”

Page asked in a giddy tone and Ryan smiled as his eyes remained glued to the beautiful Bostonian heiress.

“I’m down, even if the beer is weak.”

“As long as they have Guinness on tap, ye can count me in.”

Darla said and Page turned and gave Kaylee a doe-eyed sullen look.

“Come on Kay… You know you can use a drink after the shenanigans the cops just put you through.”

“Page, we weren’t supposed to say that!”

Ryan snapped lowly, but everyone could hear the not-whisper-whisper.

“It’s fine, I am down, but shouldn’t we at least finish our classes?”

“You’re such a girl-scout!”

“I wish I’d been a girl-scout.
