Penelope stared across the kitchen at Jay. Her foot bounced against the tile floor, stomach twisting with nerves. The creaks of the house settling and clattering of pipes were louder than they should be. The dinner she’d hoped would include candlelight, some flirting, and a few smoldering gazes before she surprised him with news about the offer on his sculpture had become a dinner for three. Which was really okay, because Jay had introduced her to his grandfather.

That had to mean something, right?

Her gift, still in the backseat of her SUV, called out to her as she stared at the back door to the farmhouse. It would only take a second to get it. Another few for him to open it. And while she wanted to wait until they were alone, she’d held on as long as she could. “I’ll be right back. I have to get something out of the car.”

Jay looked up from the salad he was crafting at the island counter. “You want me to come with you? It’s kind of dark.”

Time alone with Jay in the dark or in the light or wherever they could manage would be great since Nick had accompanied them to lunch, then did progress checks every few minutes throughout the day. Penelope shook her head. “I’ll be okay. I parked close.”

Jay wiped his hands on a dish towel, then took a quick look into the living room, where Gramps sat watching a game show and shouting out the answers. “I’ll just come along.” He waited until they were outside before he spun her against him. “Sorry about tonight. Gramps seemed a little off today, but backing out of our plans for tonight was unacceptable.”

His fingers slipped along her cheek into her hair. This was a man who knew how to use touch to entice, to tempt, to make her skin come alive. She brushed her thumb across his cheek. “It’s okay. I like getting to know more about your life.”

Crickets chirped, leaves beat against their branches, and the moon shined, but when Jay kissed her the world went quiet and still. Only he existed. His mouth. His tongue. The crush of his body against hers as he moved in closer and held her hip to hip against a tree.

Her hands slid down his chest, and she held one over his heart, and slipped the thumb of her opposite hand into his belt loop, her fingers curling into a fist at his hip. Of all the things in this world, his kissing skills ranked high on her top-ten favorites.

“Jay!” Gramps called out from the back door. He had one hand shielding his eyes as if the moon was too bright. “Jay! Are you out here?”

Jay leaned his head against Penelope’s forehead and closed his eyes before he turned his head. “You okay, Gramps?”

Penelope saw his shoulders relax. “Ah, yeah. I just didn’t know where you went.”

Jay’s hands massaged her hips. It was just as comforting as it was arousing.

“Penelope needed something in her car is all,” Jay called out.
