Chapter Eight

“So your date didn’t happen?” Isobel lifted her martini to her lips and took a small sip. “Why not?”

“He said he wanted to spend some time with his father. And I understand.” Kellan didn’t tell her the rest. What use would that do? She’d have questions, and he didn’t have any answers to any off them.

“You don’t have to be okay about it,” Isobel told him. “You understand and you think he’s hotter for doing it, but you still would have liked it if he was sitting across from you.”

Kellan nodded. “Does that make me an ass?”

“No. You have feelings for this man.”

“I do. You don’t know how close we came to making love a couple of days ago.” He lifted his cranberry juice to his lips but ignored it. “But I just couldn’t—I mean I was ready. More than a little ready and we were in my bedroom and he was almost naked and…” Kellan sighed and drank more than half the contents from his glass. “I knew he was going through a lot, and I just couldn’t let myself do that to him.”

“Sometimes you’re too good, Kellan Alroy O’Brien.”

He chuckled. “My little friend—” Kellan pointed to his lap. “Does not agree with you.”

Isobel shrugged with a giggle. “He can wait.”

The waiter arrived with their food and left them alone again. Though Kellan picked up his food, he was suddenly not as hungry as he first thought. “I want him, Issy. And he’s right there.”

“Are you regretting not making love when he offered?”

“Yes and no.”

“Explain that one to me.” She pushed some spinach into her mouth.

“No, I don’t regret it because he wasn’t in the right place, mentally. He was scared and angry and hurt, and I didn’t want him to wake up beside me later and regret it. And yes because all I wanted was to feel him bare against me. I’ve waited so long—I mean I never thought I’d see him again and I’d even moved on but now that he’s back it is almost like I’m twenty-five again and standing at the path watching him sleep under that tree with the most beautiful sound around me.”

“O, if you were so in love with this man, why didn’t you say something? You could have been there for him.”

Kellan ate silently for a while before he cleared his throat and set his fork down. “I was young. I’d just started med school, and I didn’t think I was ready for a relationship. Hell, I was still holding out some hope that I was straight.”

“Right. Because you have a straight bone in your body.”

“You’re a dick, you know that?”

“I’ve been told.”

Kellan chuckled. “Then I see him around town and I found myself hiding behind stalls of produce just to get a good look at him, and I couldn’t stop thinking about him even when I was with Frank. I mean, Gideon never came to my head during the important times, but every time I let myself sit for too long, be silent for too long, he’d come floating into my head.
