chapter ten

“It wasn’t me. I can’t open or close a door,” Bella whispered, though I wasn’t sure why she was trying to be quiet. Few could see or hear her.

“I figured that. Could you see the person’s face?” I kept my voice low in case someone was in the hallway.

“No, and it’s not like I can see in the dark just because I’m dead, which really stinks.”

“But you heard the door open, right?” I wanted to make sure I hadn’t dreamt it.

“Yes.”

"How about looking in the hallway?" Sheesh. I should have thought of that a minute ago.

Bella slipped through the wall and returned seconds later. "No one is out here."

"I knew I’d locked the door."

I slipped out of the bed onto rather shaky legs. I turned on the lights and checked the lock, but it didn’t appear to have been tampered with. However, the lock was now in the open position, implying someone had come in. That knowledge gave me the chills.

“I know you said it was dark, but did you see this person try to do something to me?” If this person came into my room to harm me, what stopped him or her?

“Just that the person walked over to your bed. You coughed or groaned, and then he or she turned around and left.”

That made no sense. I must have been in a dead sleep, because I didn’t remember making a sound. Okay, when I sat up and hit my head, I’d grunted. “Why do you think a person would come in and then leave? Surely, a little moan wouldn’t put him off. If he was the same person who killed you, he wouldn’t have cold feet about killing again.”

“I don’t know.”

Just then Lorenzo floated in. “Why are you two up? Or rather, Rihanna, why are you up?”

I told him about the intruder. “I’m not sure I can go back to sleep.”

“Don’t worry. Bella and I can take turns standing watch in the hallway if you like. If anyone tries to break into your room, we’ll come in and warn you.”

That would work. “I suppose if the killer is a warlock or witch, they will see you and not try anything.”

“If you say so,” Lorenzo said.

“Did you speak with my grandmother?” Bella asked.

“I did.” Lorenzo shifted his gaze between us.

“And?” I asked.

“Bella’s grandmother performed a few spells that were, shall we say, meant to harm, but she doesn’t remember who requested the spell.”

That wasn’t helpful at all. I imagine she’d remember the recipient of the spell though. “Did you suggest any names to her?”

Lorenzo lifted his chin. “If I could have written down the names of the passengers and the crew that would have helped, but even if you’d given me a list, it’s not like I could have carried it with me.”

Bella was still holding her voodoo doll, but she had it with her when she died. I guess that made a difference.

“I get that, but surely, you remembered the name of the chef and the captain?”

“I did.
