CHAPTER 13

“I don’t think we can leave the police out of this any longer,” I said to Zelda. “This is serious. We’ve pretty much confirmed that Constance was poisoned.”

“Constance?” Colin asked from his side of the counter. “She’s your aunt?”

“You knew her?” I asked.

“I mean, in passing. She owned the bakery by the park, right? I went in there a few times. She had the best brownies. Now I think about it I can see the resemblance between you both. I heard she died of a heart attack, it was last year, wasn’t it?”

I nodded. “If this sample is potential evidence in a crime scene, do you still have to destroy it?”

“There are caveats. This is an unusual situation because I know this is stolen, and I know where it comes from. I will have to call the police unfortunately, and if they ask who gave me this sample, I will have to tell them, even with the amnesty.”

“That’s fine,” I said. “We’re trying to find out what happened to Constance. We have nothing to hide.”

Colin picked up a phone from the wall and dialed a number. After a minute of waiting, he hung up. “The line’s busy, I can’t get through. If you girls leave your contact details that’ll be great. Once I get through to the police, I can get them to call you. I can also do a test and double check this is indeed fentanyl, but I’m ninety-nine percent certain already. I know this jar.”

Zelda and I thanked Colin for his time, and we exited the drug store. On the way back to the bakery we stopped for sushi at Zelda’s request, I picked up the tab to thank her for the backup.

“What kind of police station doesn’t answer the phone?” I asked Zelda, thinking back to Colin getting a busy tone at the drug store.

“Uh this is Compass Cove, Zora,” Zelda pointed out. “The police department here isn’t exactly a swat team response. Burt is the Sheriff, and his two sons are his deputies. His wife works the desk in the station!”

“So, the police department around here is literally a mom-and-pop operation?” I asked, wondering if I was hearing this right.

“Pretty much! If there’s ever a reason for the whole station to head out—and that happens maybe once a decade—no one answers the phone, because there’s no one there to answer it!”

“Sounds like a really slick operation.”

“They’re not the best,” Zelda admitted.

“I wonder if something big is happening now then?” I asked. Just as I did a police car came hurtling down the street, its sirens flashing as the car skidded around a corner and disappeared out of sight. It was heading in the direction of the park.

“Guess that answers that one,” Zelda said. “Maybe a teenager set fire to a tree or something.”

For the next ten minutes Zelda and I talked at random as we walked back to the bakery. Upon turning onto the street that ran by the park we saw ambulances and police cars parked up outside the park perimeter.
