Amity Blue

Charles had led them to a building that was even more impressive than the mish-mash of architecture in the city. Marble steps, columns, and an enormous door all assured that this house wouldn’t be missed. Above the third floor, a rooftop garden held towering trees and plants that draped over the sides. And on the second floor, a long balcony stretched half the length of the building.

His voice was a low rumble as he leaned toward Amity and murmured, “Welcome to my home, Miss Blue.”

She raised both brows at him. “A bit over the top, don’t you think?”

He lifted one shoulder slightly. “I like beautiful, complicated things.”

Amity snorted at his tone, and he gave her a strange look.

“What?”

Charles shook his head. “You’re unusual.”

“So are you.” She gestured to the house. “Lead on, or are we waiting for a red carpet to roll out to greet you?”

His lips quirked in a small smile, and he turned to Rebekkah. “You and Montgomery can go freshen up in your rooms, my dear. I’ll show Miss Blue to hers.”

Byron gave Amity a look that she knew was intended to ask if she needed help of any sort.

“I have a room?” she asked.

“Of course.” Charles covered her hand with his and escorted her up the absurdly beautiful steps outside his home as he said, “Rooms. A sleeping room, a sitting room, and a bathing room. There are dresses and shoes and—”

“Not a dress girl,” she interrupted.

“We’ll have trousers made for you then. Whatever pleases you, Amity. You only have to say the word, and I’ll do all I can to make it so.” He’d stopped in the foyer inside his home.

At the foot of the staircase, several people waited. One man looked like security, and the other two were maids in some sort of old-fashioned black and white uniforms. After a lifetime of modest means and normal people, this was a lot to take in.

“Patricia will look after your needs, Amity. After you’ve changed and perhaps enjoyed a good soak, we can dine.”

“Rebekkah tells you there is a dead guy killing people, and you want to go to dinner?”

“There are always dead men to attend, and there are always crises looming,” Charles said reasonably. “You will only have one first day in my world. We will relax, enjoy an evening out, and then I will tell Rebekkah what she wants to know.” His voice was gentle already, but it became more so as he added, “She expects as much, as does Montgomery even though he despises it; that’s why they’ve gone on to Rebekkah’s rooms with Cora already.”

Amity looked to the staircase where, indeed, her friends were already vanishing. Today had been long and filled with surprises she could never have guessed. Taking a moment to pause and think certainly did sound appealing.

Quietly, she followed the remaining maid, Patricia, to her rooms to bath and perhaps change.
