As soon as she was around the corner, Lexi let out a gasp. That’s the girlfriend. The woman Nick is in love with. Holy hell. She put her hand over her mouth. The one he bought the ring for. Her eyes started to water, and she hugged herself. Why was her love life always so complicated? Why had she fallen for Nick? He was her witness. And he belonged to someone else. It was wrong. Just wrong. But she couldn’t help it. Her heart didn’t follow the rules. Never had.

Should I tell him that his girlfriend is here in Wyoming? Lexi bent over and put her hands on her knees to steady herself. No. She couldn’t tell him. To tell him would be risking his life. She wasn’t just being selfish. It was for his own good.

Sucking in air, she tried to quash the questions racing through her head. Come on, Lexi. Get it together. You’re at a crime scene.

“Are you injured?” A voice from the doorway startled her. It was Noah Stark, her colleague. Nice enough guy. But she couldn’t afford to appear weak in front of him.

“No.” She straightened and adjusted her blouse. “It’s his blood. Not mine.” She took a deep breath and filled Noah in on what had happened.

“There are two suspects in the other room.” She waved her thumb in the direction of the living room. “Can you wait for the coroner while I take them to headquarters? Drake will want to question them.” Drake. Dammit. She hadn’t called him yet. If there was a mole in WITSEC, they didn’t have a moment to lose. All of their witnesses and the whole damned WITSEC program was at risk.

Two hours later—after Drake was satisfied the stupid kids had nothing to do with the murder or the mole—she escorted Bonnie and Clod to I-25 and pointed them south. They’d have to head east on I-80 out of Cheyenne. Hopefully that would be the last she laid eyes on either one of them. Especially the girlfriend.

Sigh. So that skinny, whiny Yank was the girlfriend. What does Nick see in her? She looked like a bag lady with that goofy Elmer Fudd hat and two coats. Who wears red cowboy boots? And those frayed jeans were wet up to her knees. She was a hot mess.

Lexi heard her Aunt Martha’s voice in her head: Bless her little heart. Whenever Aunt Martha felt sorry for someone, she’d say, “Bless her little heart.” Like warmed-over sweet tea on a sultry day, it was really more of an insult.

As Lexi watched the sports car speed off down the highway, she hoped she wouldn’t have to add injury to insult. But if the girlfriend or her scraggly sidekick showed up again, she’d have to haul ’em off just to keep them out of the way.

She shuddered. She’d almost pulled on those idiot kids. She could have shot one of them. Or what if they’d gotten in the way of the bullet meant for Bobby? Kids.
