There are three stages you will need to go through to achieve your aim here – first, you need to bring your king and rook together – let them follow each other closely on the board. The notation below shows you how to achieve that. We will not explain some of the notation symbols because it is assumed that you should know how to read notation by now.

2 Kc3

2… Ke5

3 Rh4

3… Kd5

4 Rc4

The diagram shows all the moves made so far.

From the above diagram, you can see that White has successfully placed his king and rook side by side. This means that he has completed the first stage of the checkmating procedure, sequence or process. Notice that White has successfully boxed Black’s king to only the upper end of the board.
