Chapter Twenty-Six

Hannah

There’s a knock on the door just after three o’clock, though I’m not expecting anyone. It’s probably Jess and Layla, desperate for the juicy details about my night with Cade. I’ve had my phone on silent all day, choosing to read in bed and enjoy the first feelings of contentment I’ve felt in years. Decades, even.

Heck, have I ever felt like this?

I can’t say I have, and I plan on basking in it as long as possible.

I tighten the belt of my robe around my waist and head downstairs. Lindsay took off to study at Tina’s shortly after lunch, choosing to avoid the topic of my sleepover guest altogether, which is fine by me. I don’t want her to think there’s a new man in my life or that I’m trying to replace her dad, so if we can just put this behind us, all the better. Cade was a brief—but wonderful—blip on my radar, nothing more. He gave me a night of otherworldly sex, and that’s all it was.

Though not talking to Lindsay about Cade is a good thing, I’m kinda dying to tell Jess and Layla all the juicy details.

That thing he did to my butt?

Oh my god.

I reach for the door and pull it open. My smile spreads as my cheeks heat, embarrassment filling me even at the thought of what we did last night. I’m not usually so uninhibited, so—

My sails deflate and my smile falls. “Devon.”

He tilts his head, scowling as he looks me over. “It’s three in the afternoon, Hannah. Pull your shit together.”

I scoff as he walks past me. “I’m sorry, but you don’t actually live here anymore.” I hold the door open in the hopes he’ll realize his mistake and walk the hell back outside.

“Is he here?”

I frown. “What? Who?”

His lip curls in disgust. “Him.” He holds up a tabloid with two people on the cover.

There’s no doubt who that tiny arrangement of stars across the woman’s left shoulder belongs to. My only tattoo, and one I plan on getting covered up because one of those three stars is Devon’s. It’s obvious to anyone who knows me that I’m the woman in the photo, even though you can’t see my face.

It’s blocked by Cade’s. Because we’re kissing.

Emotions fight to the forefront of my mind. First, pride, because I look damn good in his arms. Those jeans make my ass look phenomenal, and he holds me like he’s offering me more than just a kiss. More than just a night together. Next, excitement pushes to the front of the pack. Thinking about Cade brings last night right back into perfect focus and desire heats my blood.

Then shame.

Guilt.

Embarrassment.

“Shit,” I whisper.

Devon laughs, a bitter, disgusted sound. “Yeah, Hannah, shit.” He shakes the magazine at me. “What is he, seventeen? You could go to jail for this!”

“He’s twenty-two—”

“Oh, I suppose that makes it better!” He laughs bitterly. “Might I remind you that you’re pushing forty, Hannah? You could be his mom.” The words drip with disgust, and for a moment, it works.
