CHAPTER EIGHT
While Wade bought a prepackaged sandwich and some soda for himself for lunch, she filled her tank. He came out before she finished.
âSee? I told you. She knows Jonah a lot better than me and even she agrees he isnât the killing type.â
âIâm not saying youâre wrong,â she said. âI barely know any of these people. But someone killed Annabelle, and I found her in the Mitchellsâ boarded up attic. The killer almost has to have been Jonah or his dad, and I donât know why Mason Mitchell would kill his sonâs girlfriend.â
âWell, how about we go talk to that other guy she mentioned? Maybe he still lives near them.â
âHe does,â Flora said with a sigh. âI met him yesterday. He lives right across the street. I didnât get any creepy vibes from him, but I only met him the once.â
âSo, letâs go chat with him,â Wade said. âTo me, it sounds like heâs the most likely suspect.â
She pressed her lips together. It was true that the house had been sitting empty for years, and she knew there had been at least a few break-ins. It was possible Wyatt had hidden her body there after the Mitchells moved out⦠or maybe even while they were living there, if they went out of town and he knew where their key was hidden.
âIâm not sure,â she said as she returned the nozzle to the pump and screwed her gas cap on. âI might not be planning on living at that house, but Iâm still going to see an awful lot of Wyatt and his wife. I donât want to get off on the wrong foot with them. And if youâre right, and heâs behind this, he might decide you and I should be his next victims. I donât want to have to look over my shoulder every time Iâm at the house.â
âArenât you going to be looking over your shoulder anyway?â Wade asked. âThe way I see it is you and I are both already involved in this. It might have been a while since I worked for Mr. Morgan, but I remember everything about her disappearance, especially those first few weeks. I always hoped sheâd be found, and now that she has been, I want to know exactly what happened to her. I thought you of all people would understand that. Youâre always getting involved in little mysteries, and you helped me before, back when I first got back to town.â
âI do understand,â she told him. âAnd youâre right that Iâm going to be looking over my shoulder until this is solved either way. Iâll go with you to talk to Wyatt, but let me do the talking again, all right? Donât accuse him of anything. I really donât want to start off on the wrong foot with this guy.â
âHey, I wonât say a word if you donât want me to. Do you want to drive together? My car is kind of a beater.â
âYeah, hop in,â Flora said.
She had driven
