CHAPTER 15

“OMG!” Mia breathed.

“Whatever, I already told you…” Toby’s voice trailed off as he disappeared around the side of the house.

“Did he just say something about Lana?” Mia questioned.

“That’s what I heard,” Jake said with a nod.

Ellie slumped back in the chair. Lola leapt up on the chair’s arm. “Ellie, are you okay?”

“I can’t believe this. Toby has a connection to Lana?”

Jake glanced over his shoulder before toggling on his phone.

“What are you doing?” Mia asked. “Do you have one of those voice enhancers on there?”

“Huh? No. I was going to tell Scarlett to skip the connection search, though calling those dogs off may be impossible.”

“What? Why?” Mia asked. “We have to know!”

Jake let his lips fall open before he flicked his gaze to Ellie. “Well…”

“If it’s on my account, don’t call her off. We have to know. I just…once again, I’m shocked by Toby, and not in a good way.”

Mia grabbed her friend’s hand and patted it. “Sorry, El.”

“It’s fine. It’s just more evidence that what I did was right.”

“Okay, if you’re sure. Because if he has a connection to Lana or Zane, Scarlett will find it. And she won’t let it go.”

“I’m sure. It has nothing to do with me. And if he’s into something he shouldn’t be, I don’t want him under this roof.”

Jake shoved his phone into his pocket with a nod. “Okay. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

Mia slapped her hands against the wooden arms and rose. “Come on, let’s finish our walk. Although, everyone’s accounted for.”

“Except Lana?” Jake said as they stood, and Ellie tugged Lola along with them.

Mia peered into the darkness. “Hey, do you think she’ll come back here?”

“Do you smell anyone, Lol?” Ellie asked.

“No. I don’t smell anyone out here now.”

“What do you think, Lola? Will we find Lana?” Mia asked as they strolled to the opposite corner of the house.

“No, I just said no. No one is out here. Ellie, tell her.”

“She’s not barking, so she must not smell anyone.”

Jake shoved his hands into his pockets as they rounded the corner. “I’m surprised she let Toby sneak up on us.”

“Hey, I did not! You stopped me from barking,” Lola complained.

“I caught her before she could bark and ruin it for us.”

“Ruin it?” Lola asked.

“And now we got the information that Toby knows Lana.”

They approached the front of the house. “And knows someone else who knows Lana. He told the person he was talking to that they had to find Lana.”

“I wonder if we can find out who he was talking to?” Mia asked. “Jake, can you find out who he was talking to?”

“What? No,” he said with a shake of his head, his eyebrows crinkling as they approached the warm lights of the porch. “Why would you think I could?”

Mia shrugged and climbed to the now-empty porch. “You’re good with technology. I figured you could yeet it or something.”

Jake scratched his head before sliding a lock of hair behind his ear. “That’s not even…it doesn’t make sense.”

Ellie let Lola off
