Chapter Seventeen

Everett

“Are you going to go to the fourth of July pub crawl?” Dre asks me.

I shrug. “Maybe. Some of the guys at the station talked about it.”

“It’s a lot of fun. Drinks. Revelry. Hot guys.”

I chuckle. “I don’t think I am interested in the hot guys.”

Malilah looks at me. “No, just my great-granddaughter.”

“Hamma!” Layla shouts at her.

“Oh, sweet Huyanna, I already told you, you can’t keep it from me.”

Layla rolls her eyes at her great-grandmother. “Apparently I can’t keep anything from you.”

“You should come with us,” Dre says.

“I’ll talk to the guys. And I would love to spend time with Layla outside the vineyard.” I look over at Layla. She is shooting daggers at me and I bite back a laugh.

“See, you can’t keep anything from me, Huyanna.” Hamma chuckles.

“I really just want to see if she is a bitch to everyone or just me,” I add.

This time Layla kicks me under the table. I look over at Dre who is smirking as she looks between us. Malilah scolds Layla and I can’t help but laugh.

“Everett, would you be a dear and grab us another bottle of wine.”

“Sure thing,” I answer. I get up and head into the house as I hear Layla getting yelled at by her great-grandmother.

I head down the stairs to the cellar and look for Malilah’s favorite wine. It’s funny how after just a few months here I know a lot of her favorite things. She loves a nice well-done steak which I am appalled about, she likes to go into town to play bridge and gossip, and she likes spending her evenings watching the sunset. It makes me think of all the things I want to learn about her great-granddaughter. Hopefully, they don’t have the same taste in their steak.

I find the bottle of red I am looking for and turn to head back up the stairs when I see Layla standing at the bottom of the staircase with a mischievous look on her face.

“I thought you might need help finding a bottle.”

I raise a brow at her. “Ugh, you know I have been down here enough to know where things are.”

“Hmm.”

“Is that what you told those two when you came down here?” I ask.

She shakes her head. “I just excused myself.”

“And you don’t think that maybe they thought you were coming down here?”

“Oh, I know they did.”

I stare at her lips as she bites on her bottom one. “I thought you didn’t want them to know about us.”

“It’s too late,” she shrugs.

“Is it now?”

She nods and her eyes turn lustful, the gold burning bright over the brown. I set the bottle of wine in my hands back into a rack and grab her waist, pulling her into me so quickly she stumbles into my chest.

I feast on her lips while she claws at my chest. God, kissing her is one of my new favorite pastimes. I haven’t touched her lips since yesterday morning and it feels like it’s been years.

She pushes me backward and my back slams against one of the wine racks, shaking the bottles.
