Chapter 11
I followed Duffy through the maze of tall buildings and dimly-lit street lights until we reached one of the pubs on the campus. It was not much to look at, but as long as the inside had the smell of cleaning fluids mixed with alcohol I would have been fine.
The pub, however, did not look like the standard one you would see in one of the main towns, where interior design was some far flung idea of wealth and pompous affiliations. In fact, the campus pub without any name over itâs door, looked to be one of those hipster joints, where the ceiling had been purposely left without tiles, leaving the piping and ventilation exposed.
I was not too happy about that, but Duffy had promised the floors would be sticky and every touchable surface a breeding ground for bacteria, and so at least there would be a couple of homey feelings about the place.
I pulled the door open and held it for Deputy Ro to step inside. Her brown curls swayed behind her and graced the small of her back. I walked behind her and let the saloon-type door swing behind me, until it eventually closed. I looked around and sighed as I took in this modern pub where every wall was painted some shade of grey. I wondered if they had just created their own special colour at some point, because I had never seen so many variations of grey before. Even the chairs were crushed velvet, and I shook my head as I tried to find a place to hide.
There were a few students dotted around, with pitchers of some over-priced beverage, and most likely discussing the pros and cons of Nazism, and falling into the âwell it would have worked on paperâ arguments. The odd, excessively tanned student with some kind of brightly coloured genie pants discussed how amazing the âgap yearâ had been, and how it âdefined him as a personâ.
It was definitely an assault on my eyes, and so I quickly made my way past the groups of strangely dressed youngsters and found a more secluded table in the back of the pub by the window that looked out into complete blackness.
I sat down at the table and ran my fingers across the sticky surface.
âAt least you were right about one thing,â I laughed.
âSee, not everything is about studying and grades,â Deputy Ro smiled.
âHmm, still an odd mixture of people,â I replied and then picked up the menu that had been written on a slab of slate.
âYeah, theyâll grow out of being like that,â Duffy promised.
âWill they?â I asked. âDid you?â
âDo I look like one of those students?â the brunette asked.
âPoint taken.â I scanned the menu for something other than the uber-healthy alternatives of rye bread and soya milk lattes that were on offer.
âThey have their meat menu on the other side,â Deputy Ro said and then leaned over the table to turn the tablet over.
âThank god for that. How many times have you been here?â I asked.
