CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Jofi might not have been able to give her a direct bearing, but the grass continued to betray the location of the invisible man. He should have stayed on the sidewalk. That meant he wasn’t a flawless assassin who anticipated every detail.

Her heart pounded. Her anger wouldn’t be sated until she got in a solid punch or shot. She didn’t plan to kill the man if she didn’t have to, but after his trap, she wasn’t feeling merciful, either. It was up to him.

Lyssa didn’t open fire, choosing instead to get closer to her target. Without being able to see him, there was too big a chance he would dodge. Stray bullets in the middle of a residential park presented too high a risk of collateral damage to the nearby houses, given the increased power and range of her weapons.

She didn’t blame herself for the exploding house, but she wouldn’t forgive herself if an innocent person got shot because she was sloppy. She was Hecate, an Eclipse of the Illuminated Society, and she’d show Brockwell how real professionals worked.

“I can follow you wherever you go,” Lyssa shouted. “You must know that by now. And you’ve really ticked me off, so there’s no way I’ll let you go.”

She waited, curious to see if he’d respond either verbally or with an attack. Jofi’s warnings pointed at Tallridge’s shards not working instantly.

“You’re defeated,” Lyssa continued. “Give up. I know you’re not a Sorcerer. You would have thrown something at me already. Whatever shards you’ve collected are nothing before the power of a Sorceress, especially one who is as pissed off as I am. You’re lucky I managed to get the team out of there before you blew them all to hell, but that doesn’t mean I forgive you for trying.”

His trail led to a retention pond. Lyssa scoffed when the water splashed on the edge. She lifted her guns when she felt a burst of sorcery.

Tallridge would get one shot to take her out without betraying his position. Between Jofi and her instincts, she could get a good bearing after that.

“More spirits are materializing in this area,” Jofi alerted.

Lyssa pointed her gun at the pond. “Don’t worry; this will be over soon. That asshole is trying my patience.”

She aimed at the shore where the target had entered and waited for more displacement in the water. There was nothing.

“Even if he stopped moving, I should see the water flowing around him,” Lyssa said, confused.

“Unless he went underwater,” Jofi replied.

“He might be able to breathe underwater,” Lyssa countered. “But I didn’t see any displacement. Or maybe his spirit-based concealment spells work better when he’s in water. That’s why I hate spirits other than you. I don’t know how they work.”

“I appreciate your consideration.”

Lyssa didn’t want to wait Tallridge out now that he’d stopped running. Her concern about stray bullets and collateral damage wouldn’t matter if her shots didn’t hit homes. All she had to do was aim and take advantage of gravity. A downward angle would ensure the only things she murdered were grass and mud.
