Chapter 16

Liz and Kate were sitting on the cushy sofa at the back of Kate’s vintage shop, surrounded by cardboard boxes of Kate’s recent estate sale finds. Books & Browsery by the Sea was set up differently than the rest of the emporium. It had the same short perimeter walls, but Kate had created a mazelike obstacle course from a dozen seven-foot-tall barrister bookcases that she’d scored at an estate sale. Scattered randomly around were chairs, wooden benches, tables, dressers, and crates filled with her “precious junk,” as Kate’s boyfriend Alex called it. Towering bookshelves were packed with books and vintage/antique knickknacks. Each shelf had a theme that coordinated with the books’ subject matter. The shelf closest to Liz had to do with Melbourne Beach and Vero Beach. There were books on the Spanish treasure shipwreck of 1715, books on diving and fishing, along with ships in glass bottles, maps, seashells under glass cloches, a brass spyglass, and more. Kate had a good eye when arranging her shelves, and Liz was proud of her friend’s success over the past year.

“That’s quite a story,” Kate said, lapping at the whipped cream on top of the iced caramel macchiato Liz had brought her from Deli-casies. “I’m glad Aunt Amelia took the news of another murder in stride.”

“She probably thinks some miscreant walking the public beach has done Jameson in,” Liz said, pulling a book on Treasure Coast shipwrecks off the shelf.

Kate’s large, dark brown eyes opened wide. “Who do you think did it? And does this mean we have another murder to solve?”

“There is no ‘we’ in this scenario, Kate Fields. The less you know, the better off you are.”

“That sounds ominous. Are you or anyone from the Indialantic in danger? If you want, you can stay at my place.”

“Thanks for the invite, but I’m not leaving a sinking ship. The only one who might be in danger is Birdman or one of the other archeologists. But they’ll be leaving tonight. For once I’m listening to Ryan about this.”

“Good for you. But if you need anything, just remember how I helped you last January. I can see why Ryan enjoys being a private eye—it’s all quite exhilarating. Like when you catch that really rough wave pre-hurricane and you don’t know if it’s gonna be the ride of your life or a trip to Davy Jones’s locker.” Kate and her boyfriend were major surfers. When she wasn’t scouring garage sales, antique shops, used bookstores, or flea markets, or talking to characters in one of her vintage books (one of Kate’s endearing proclivities), she could be found with her handsome professional surfer-dude riding the waves at the Sebastian Inlet Beach.

“I don’t think Ryan would call all his PI work exciting. But he sure has been an asset to my father in his law cases.”

“How are Fenton and Charlotte? What’s the latest?”

“Dad’s over the moon, he’s so happy. It’s only his second time in Europe; the first was with my mother to visit her family in France.
