Chapter 19
The familiar tap-tap-tap-tap-tap followed by the backdoor being flung open brought Billy and OâMalley bolting for the visitors while Pandora streaked upstairs to the landing. As soon as the cat heard Sarah Aldersonâs voice, however, she poked her head around the balustrade and changed her mind. Shortly, she was weaving figure eights through Kingsleyâs motherâs legs and purring for her share of grandmotherly loving.
Sarah plunked her traveling cooler of comfort food on the kitchen floor before Kingsley could catch up with her. âDadâs got the chocolate group covered,â she said, motioning to Henry Alderson with her chin. Billy threw himself into his grandmaâs arms before she could stand up.
âThat husband of yours tattled. Said you were that close to the edge, so naturally we had to come. Your grandmother used to say, âTwo heads are better than one, even if one is a cabbage,â so four might double the odds. And since you never ask for help, we thought weâd just surprise you. If the microwave isnât out of commission as well as the oven, dinner will be ready at six.â
Kingsley gave her mom a protracted hug. âYou are the best! Really, Iâm fine. And itâs not all that complicated. Weâve acquired an enemy whoâs trying to kill us or drive us out of our home. And we seem to have acquired a ghostâor it acquired us.â
âIâm so glad to see you havenât lost your sense of humor and can make light of what Todd describes as a dreadful situation.â The three adults simultaneously looked at the child who was far more interested in his grandpaâs containers and the word chocolate than the grownupâs conversation. Henry sneaked him a cookie.
Henry set his stash on the counter, shaking his head. âDidnât I tell you it was a terrible mistake to leave Philadelphia?â Kingsley laughed for the first time in days at her fatherâs hackneyed joke about luring her home as if she were a runaway teen.
âTodd said youâre considering loan applicants that you rejected. Of course, you canât bring every file home,â Henry continued. âWe thought weâd spoil you-know-who so you could do your research without watching the clock. Then maybe you and Todd can go out for a nice dinner. Be alone for a change. We can stay as long as you wish.â
âDatâs OâMawwee,â Billy proclaimed to his grandpa of the little dog that was begging for his share of attention. âHeâs mine!â
Henry frowned at the pet. âWhat kind of dog is he?â
âA Siberian Weasel Hound.â
âReally! I havenât seen one of them yet, and I watch Westminster every year. Must be some new breeds or a re-established ancient one. I wonder what the breeder charges for one?â Sarah raised one eyebrow and turned her back to her husband to hide her bemused expression.
With motherly efficiency, Sarah took over the kitchen while Henry tended bar in the living room, treating Billy to a sippy cup of ginger ale, a double treat since food and beverage were never allowed beyond the kitchen.
