"Your medallion has a new ability," Rajeon informed Jessie after he woke for the evening. "If you want to talk mind to mind, just touch it with your hand and think your message at someone else with a medallion. How is the blood substitute working for you?"

"Tastes good—like it ought to," Jessie touched the medallion beneath his shirt. The blood substitute works, too—I don't feel weak, like I was afraid I would.

"I heard you," I smiled at Jessie. Can you hear me? I asked him.

I can hear you fine, he replied. "Never thought I'd see the day," he said aloud and grinned at Rajeon and me.

I understood, then. Not only did we have a way to communicate silently between us, the vampire planet we'd visited had supplied Jessie with a food source—one they also depended upon, I figured. They didn't need to bite anyone to survive.

"We're going to start where we left off last time," Nyarr told Jessie. "If you, Ishaan and Sanjay will do the sniffing for us, I hope we can pick up a trail and find where they're heading. This whole gladiator set-up isn't sitting well with the other folks we've talked to."

"It does sound like that, doesn't it? Only the gladiators are vampires, this time," I surmised. "Did they learn this after they came here, or have they always been bloodthirsty?"

"They've had leanings in that direction, and the farther they get from the original homeworld, the more bloodthirsty they seem to get," Le told me. "It's one of the reasons the Alliances are interested in their doings, although they're not quite frightened enough of the Krelk, yet."

"Only because the Krelk have stayed away from the Alliances, with the exception of Je'Dik," Loor said.

"Is it always somebody else's problem, until it becomes your problem?" I asked.

"That's it in a nutshell," Rajeon agreed. "Is everybody ready? We have vampires and Krelk to hunt tonight."

"I think we're ready," I clutched my new rifle and readied myself for transport. Nyarr took us in.
