11-Mercy

Her heart was beating too fast, and it was hard to catch her breath. She needed to leave again. Mercy couldn’t stay with Buc. There was too much going on in her head, too many things to tell him that might make him hate her.

He was a badass biker, but she was a coward. The intensity of her feelings for him hadn’t died in the last five years. In fact, being with Buc again, she knew her attachment could only grow. It was way too soon to say she loved him, but there was a part of her that knew she would. He deserved better.

Buc was sound asleep, his breathing slow and even. Moving an inch at a time, she slipped from his bed and tiptoed to the bathroom. After closing the door, she looked at the large space. It would’ve been more impressive if she wasn’t panicking and looking for an escape. It had been a while since she felt this out of control.

Mercy hated this feeling, lost and bloated with self-doubt. Her agitation grew as her fears rose. Why? What happened to the cocksure girl she’d been? She hated what she’d become. When she and Buc had met, she’d been a strong and confident person. After that, even months after her success, she’d started self-harming.

Her phone was close by, and maybe she should call Doctor Puzzuoli. Or Roni. Maybe her sister would come pick her up. What she really wanted was to calm her racing heart and stop the negative feelings swirling in her head.

Mercy took a deep breath and focused on feeling her toes. If she couldn’t handle this, all her therapy had meant nothing. She could do this. Moving forward started somewhere. She’d be damned if she let all her hard work get flushed down the drain.

She really didn’t want to leave Buc again. Besides, Charleston wasn’t that big, and Buc knew her family. Mercy would be easy to track down. And she wasn’t going to hide from the man. Her recovery depended on her being open and honest.

If she wanted a better life, she wasn’t going to disappear. Mercy had to do something besides standing in a bathroom stressing out. Anything to distract the need to search for a sharp razor and start cutting. Opening the door, she peeked in to make sure Buc was still sleeping, then quietly left his bedroom to explore the house.

It really was beautiful craftsmanship. Even in the dark, the wood floors gleamed in the natural light through the spacious windows. Mercy took a moment to look out the windows at the silhouette of the trees in the moonlight. Peace started to settle in her heart. She turned to face the kitchen.

It was spectacular with lots of cabinets made with light colored wood. A commercial-size gas stove took up most of the back wall. Mercy grinned at the hanging copper pots. None of them looked like Buc had ever used them. Not that she would, either. Cooking wasn’t her strong suit.
