Chapter Twenty-Six

Gina didn’t want to think about what she would have to do, come January 2nd. It wasn’t work that was making her shudder every time she thought about holidays coming to an end. She couldn’t remember when she’d felt this carefree, peaceful—normal. Her hostess was very gracious and was never without a smile on her face, but she felt that Max’s mother knew that the occupants of the two adjoining suites had consolidated their nighttime rest into one bedroom. Those servants who came to tidy up the suites when the occupants were elsewhere, surely shared their findings with their mistress. However, Christine’s treatment of her didn’t change. Perhaps that was what made her feel guilty. Was Max’s mother always this tolerant, she wondered?

They went out for New Years to Paradise Palace, a fancy hall twenty minutes away from Renford Park. Once again, it was a large family affair. Considering that she’d never danced before, she was a natural, and quickly picked up on the rhythm and the tempo. In fact, she knew she was a natural in most things—except driving.

“You’ve got to get out of that place,” Max murmured as they drove back to the city.

“You can come and visit me any time at Cramden’s,” she said, laughing.

“Do they allow visitors after six o’clock?”

“Of course not. Weekends are open though. One to four and six to eight.”

“I know a lot of correctional facilities that have better visiting hours,” he grumbled.

“It won’t be long now,” she said pensively.

He tensed up. “What do you mean?”

“I don’t know. Hillary has already started preparing my case for the panel. She wants to increase her stranglehold on me any way she can. She just can’t let me slip out of her grasp. Her academic career depends on it. We’ve already talked about that a little, though not in depth. Our sessions are now almost antagonistic.” She fell silent then after a few moments asked, “Max, where are we going?”

“Back to the city, back to work.”

“You know what I mean.”

He knew. Everything inside him wanted to tell her where he wanted to go, and that he wanted to stay there for as long as she wanted him. He knew he couldn’t say that to her now.

“I don’t know,” he lied, not daring to glance at her.

She stayed silent for a long time, and then said, “I do. But until you figure it out for yourself, one way or another, I’m not going to tell you my side of it.”

A great bolt of fear shot through him. “Hillary….” he said slowly. She cut him off.

“You, Max. Not Hillary. I think of her as my benefactor, and she’s done a lot for me, but this isn’t about any of those issues. It’s about you—figuring out what you really want and until you do, I’m not going to talk about it. This is it.”

“Gina, I can’t….” his voice trailed off.

“I know. That’s what I’m talking about.”

“Jesus, woman, that’s not it at all.”

“I know. But it’s still what I’m talking about.
