Standing in the center of all the chaos was Philip, giving directions and managing others. He turned and gracefully sauntered over.

“Yes, much better,” he said approvingly. “Let’s get you something to eat and we can sit down and talk.”

“Splendid idea,” agreed Hainsworth.

They followed him through the room and into the kitchen area. Tom and Sarah’s mouths watered at the prospect of what wonderful delights awaited them.

By the time Detective Gowerstone stormed into his Oxford headquarters, it was past 11:00 p.m. A few policemen worked at their desks, while others looked through files or talked on the phone.

“Where have you been, sir?” asked an officer anxiously. “We’ve tried contacting you several times.”

“I was detained by the Prime Minister. He just doesn’t understand how important this is,” Gowerstone replied resentfully. He then studied a large computer screen showing England and a small dot flashing at Windsor Castle.

Although the detective expected to capture Tom and Sarah in Oxford, he wasn’t taking any chances. He had learned that they were both very smart and extremely lucky. He also suspected that they were receiving some form of help or outside assistance, which only complicated matters. Statistically, the longer it took to capture them, the harder it would become. The first twenty-four hours were crucial, but that time had passed. So, after the balloon crashed in Oxford, Gowerstone had one of his technicians place a tracking device in the basket. If for some reason the two children escaped again, he would always know where they were, or at least where the balloon was.

“We’ve tracked them here, but there’s no more movement,” said the officer, gesturing to the monitor.

“I see.”

“What are they doing at Windsor Castle?”

“I have no idea,” he replied irritably. “The way this case is going, I’ve learned to expect anything.” Gowerstone thought for a moment as he looked at his watch. “Is the Queen in residence?”

“No, she’s at Buckingham Palace for two days.”

“Good. We’ve got a few loyal contacts at Windsor, correct?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Notify them of our situation and have them secure the children until morning.” His voice deepened. “Make sure they take every precaution to treat Tom and Sarah kindly. We’ll be there first thing to pick them up.”

“Why not tonight?”

“I don’t want to make a scene, especially at Windsor. We must handle this situation delicately.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Also, contact the local police and have them positioned around the castle. If Tom and Sarah are there, they’ll be locked in for the night.”

“I’ll take care of everything.”

“What have you found out about the man they left with?”

“His name is Dr. Randolph Churchill Hainsworth the third,” replied the officer, as he read from a file. “He’s been a professor at Trinity College for over thirty years, specializing in physics and mathematics.”

“This doesn’t make any sense,” said the detective as he rubbed his forehead. “How does he know Tom and Sarah? Why is he helping them?”

“I’m not sure. We’ve searched Hainsworth’s rooms but found nothing linking him to the children or Weatherly. Just endless stacks of ungraded papers.
