Chapter 12

The next morning, Blake was propped up in a sitting position in her hospital bed, drinking a cup of coffee that really should have been ashamed of itself and listening to George Stephanopoulos interview the newest contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Dr. Stevens had told her no screen time, but Blake really didn’t think she could start her day without Good Morning America. They had compromised. Glancing at the TV, she smiled at the blanket Dr. Stevens had draped over it to keep Blake from laying eyes on a screen. At least she could hear it. That was something.

Her normal family doctor had been in to see her already. Dr. Charlotte Stevens had been the Harpers’ family doctor since Blake was a little girl. The woman was in her sixties and still as comforting and kind as she’d been when Blake was eight. Dr. Stevens had even brought her a sucker to go with the cup of sludge the hospital tried to pass off as their morning brew. She’d almost given the woman a hug when she said Blake could go home that afternoon. Her own bed and fluffy kitty sounded very appealing.

They had also taken away her iPad, so she sat with a pad and pen in her lap, attempting to sketch out the timeline of events since Nikki’s murder. She hadn’t gotten very far when she heard a knocking on the doorframe to her room.

Looking up, she was surprised to see Saffron Holcomb standing in the doorway. Blake gave her a big smile. “Saffron! Come in!” She started to go on about how nice it was to have a visitor, but when Saffron sat down in the chair next to the bed, Blake noticed the tired look on the older woman’s face. Her graying hair hung loose around her shoulders, and the circles under her eyes indicated that she had not slept well. “What’s wrong?”

Saffron shifted nervously in her chair and glanced behind her as if someone might walk in at any moment just to eavesdrop. “I take it you haven’t heard,” she said in a conspiratorial whisper as she turned back to Blake.

Feeling her brow crinkle, Blake just knew she was going to have at least five new wrinkles by the week’s end. “Heard what?”

“Sliced,” Saffron said, leaning in. “It was hit last night.”

Blake’s eyes went wide. “Hit? What do you mean ‘hit’?”

Tossing a glance behind her, Saffron lowered her voice even more, until Blake had to strain to hear it. “It was after we closed. I got out of there around eleven fifteen and locked the place up tight. I guess when Micah came in to open up this morning, the place was in shambles. The bolt on the back door had been cut, and the kitchen looked like a tornado had hit it. The person dumped out food, broke dishes, everything.” She shook her head.

“Oh my goodness!” Could it have been the same person that had broken into her shop? Could they have
