Sophia

I was foolish to think life would go back to normal after sleeping with my boss.

Nothing would ever be the same again; not the way we looked at each other, even if just passing each other in the hall. There was an intensity that burned inside of me, and it ignited in my chest whenever he entered the room. I could only keep pretending for so long. There would come a point that I had to give in to his touch once more.

We had agreed that night that our little dalliance was just a one-time thing, that it was something we needed to do, and then we were meant to move past it. Up to that point, I had been keeping up my end of the bargain. I could not say the same for Misha.

“Privet, Papa!” Ilya squealed, his boots squelching in the mud as he raced across the yard to see his father before he left for work.

Misha laughed as his son launched himself into his arms, and he spun him around in the air. Ilya’s childish laughter brightened all our dreary mornings. While the rain had stopped for the time being, the dark clouds remained, casting a shadow on us all.

I had been so preoccupied with watching the tender father-son moment that I had not heard Andrei or Simon approaching from behind.

“How are you today, Miss Sophia?” Andrei greeted.

I always felt comfortable around him, even if I had only known him for a few weeks. Maybe it was because I trusted him the same way that Misha did, and I always felt like he had my best interests at heart. He was a rare gem in a world full of toxic people.

“Surprisingly well. I feel like I might be fitting in here after all. I think Russia could be my home.”

“We’re pleased to have you.” He smiled. “Have you had the chance to meet one of our new guards?” He waved to Simon, whose brown eyes seemed black from the lack of sunlight. His heavy gaze sent a shiver down my spine.

“Yes,” I said curtly. “He introduced himself last night.”

Misha put his son back on the grass, his interest piqued. I sensed where the conversation was headed. He whispered to his son before tousling his hair, and Ilya ran around the other side of the house, with Bear bringing up the rear. My cheeks burned when Misha stepped forward to enter our little circle.

“Sophia?” He nodded. “What are your plans for this afternoon?”

“I think we’re just going to stay inside for most of the day, as it looks like the rain is going to come back any minute,” I said, pointing my thumb to the clouds. “I had Diana fetch some American kids’ movies that I think he’ll love. How was the club opening by the way? A grand success?”

I looked between Misha and Andrei, gauging their reactions. Luckily, their eyes lit up, and I sighed with relief that I had not overstepped my boundaries.

“We had a few hiccups, but Misha is an excellent boss, which I’m sure you already know,” Andrei confirmed.
