Chapter 21
San Francisco Community Hospital
Jen was mid-shift during a busy day in the ER. She was hustling from room-to-room, treating everything from broken arms to inflamed gallbladders. By late afternoon, she had the chance to wolf down some yogurt and a banana in the back doc room, as she mindlessly scrolled through her emails. Her business meeting with Amanda was in two hours—too far away to get excited, but soon enough to think about what she was going to wear.
I’m not gonna wear my red dress. That would be totally immature, coming across as anxious. She knows I’m working in the ER all day, so I’d look like this was my big night out. Talk about looking desperate, especially at a business meeting. Nothing about this—this situation with Amanda—is a date. I have to play it cool, come across as the professional I am, not some sex-starved newbie.
No dress. I’ll wear the black slacks. My ass looks hot in those pants, and the blouse accentuates my body. I’m sure Amanda will still be in her work clothes. She’s probably working with Tommy right now on the murder investigation.
They could be interviewing Lane. He said he thought they’d want to talk to him today, and he welcomed it. He has to share his own lab results with them, though. They’re so exonerating. He obviously wouldn’t poison himself, so someone else had to have done it. Why the hesitation to share them in the first place? What the hell is wrong with him? Maybe he wasn’t thinking clearly after the heart episode.
There was a knock at the door, and a nurse popped her head around the edge. “Dr. Dawson, the family in room ten is asking to see you.”
“Be right there,” Jen replied, hopping up.

The timing of the wiretap order was perfect because when Tommy sat down at his desk, there was a message in his voicemail box from Blake, “Hey man, you dissed me by talking to Trevor. He thinks I killed Natasha now. I told you that Wallace killed Natasha. Not me. I can’t believe you did that—behind my back and everything. I’m coming over to get my cell. You better have it ready.”
Tommy was amused. He liked it better when suspects were defensive and surly, rather than boring and cooperative. Anger meant they were more likely to make a mistake. Slip up. Leave a clue for Tommy to find. Surly suspects made the investigation more fun, energizing him for the hunt.
He IM’d the computer guys, confirming they had synched up their computers to both cell phones, telling them Blake was on his way.
Tommy turned to his emails and saw that the computer guys had sent him another clip of Natasha’s apartment security cam footage. He clicked it open and watched.
This clip was labeled “Dr. Wallace,” so he expected it to be a montage of the dates and times that Wallace had entered her apartment building. As he watched, Tommy saw Wallace come into view, walking through the lobby and entering the elevator.
