CHAPTER TWELVE

The wholesale store for the glass sculptures was a bust. The nice woman behind the counter knew Ursula and confirmed that she picked up her order on Tuesday and left. She asked if everything was all right, and I didn’t have the heart to tell her it wasn’t, so I smiled and left as quickly as I could.

I had opened up my senses and been transfixed by the swirling colors of the sculptures. They were like ice with rainbows trapped inside, gleaming with the work and vision that had gone into shaping them. There wasn’t any more magic in the place, other than whatever act of divine providence got me out the door without breaking anything.

My next plan of attack involved visiting a bunch of new age shops to track down where Ursula had gone for her class. As it turned out, there were a lot of new age shops in the greater Boston area. Like, way more than I would’ve ever thought.

Salem made sense, or maybe New Orleans—where there was all kinds of history of the occult—but Boston? Our magic was in clam chowder.

After the fourth store where I ended up with nothing but a headache and a lingering smell of patchouli clinging to my clothes, I figured I needed a better plan of attack.

That meant doing something unthinkable.

I sighed, reminded myself that there very well might be lives on the line, and dialed my sister.

“Hey, what’s up? I’m in line picking up coffee.”

“Hey, Lindsey.” Okay, deep breath, Ash. I just had to power through it. “Just wanted to ask a quick question. You know those new age shops you get candles and stuff from? What are the most popular ones?”

I braced myself for gloating, for laughter. I still hadn’t fully lived down the time she’d walked in on me trying to meditate. This was going to be an ‘I told you so’ to shatter the sound barrier.

Instead, what I got was a quiet, almost suspicious, “Why are you asking?”

The cognitive dissonance left me speechless for a second. I honestly hadn’t expected to have to explain any kind of reasoning. What was this? When I asked for something Lindsey knew more about than me, she rubbed it in a bit and then told me. That was the way of the world, that was the natural order. What was happening?

And, like each time I was caught off guard, I flubbed it hard. “I, uh, thought some crystals would make my apartment more… energy positive.”

There were days it shocked me that Seaton accepted me into their graduate program.

“Right.” I heard the barista call my sister’s name over the line. “They’re all good. I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

And then she hung up.

I stared at my phone, not comprehending. They’re all good? What the hell?

I finally moved when an elderly lady in a pink knit hat with an enormous pompom cleared her throat and I realized I was blocking the sidewalk.

That had been weird. Like, even for my sister. I saw what mum meant.
