BEDTIME STORIES

After I finish in the bathroom and dress in the silk red pajama shorts and camisole set Jonathan bought me, I move back out into the living room to help Pavma, Evan, and Felix unroll their sleeping bags, finding them extra pillows so they are as comfortable as possible, sleeping on the floor and couch.

But Felix waves me away from his sleeping bag. “I don’t need it. I’m on duty tonight.”

My nose scrunches. “On duty? For what?”

Felix motions around the house. “Guarding the place so ye can sleep without fear of anyone breaking in and coming for ye.”

My shoulders lower as compassion swells in me. “Oh, hun. You don’t need to do that. We’ve got locks on the doors, and no one is coming for me. The best thing you can do for me is get a good night’s rest. Let’s see if that undoes that permanent scowl you’ve got going there.” I reach up and pinch his cheek because I know the sweetness disgusts him.

Evan comes into the living room from the kitchen, a glass of water in his hand. His eyes fall on me and widen, as if he’s shocked I can look anything but ragged and haggard. He doesn’t say anything, but the intensity of his gaze says a lot.

The red silk pajama set I’m wearing is probably the sexiest I’ve looked in who knows how long. I hate that Jonathan spends money on me, but I admit that he’s better at shopping for me than I am. I value practicality and price over sex appeal. Then it dawns on me that the men from Crimshade have probably only ever seen women in those long dresses. When I wore jeans, it was a comical scandal, as if I was playing dress-up and pretending to be a man in their culture. But now that I’m thinking over the discrepancies in our worlds, I wonder if any of them have ever seen a woman’s bare legs outside the bedroom.

Whatever. I had to get used to their world. They can get used to mine. I still have to wear this stinking jade necklace from their world, even when I go to sleep. Though thankfully, the voices have died down since crossing into Common.

I kiss Felix’s cheek goodnight, then Pavma’s, smirking at the cuteness when a blush rises and his neck shrinks. I don’t know Evan at all, so instead of kissing his cheek, I bump my fist to his. “I’m glad you’re here, Evan. The guys deserve as many good people in their lives as they can get. If you need anything to get yourself settled in with us, let me know.”

Evan opens his mouth like he wants to ask for something that’s very important to him, but then snaps it shut before replying with a humble, “Thank ye, Your Grace. Letting me stay here is more than generous. I’ll guard the grounds for ye tonight so Felix can sleep.”

“Ho, no,” Felix whirls on us. “I called guard duty. I’ll not lie around while there’s work to be done.
