Parker wove through the winding mountain roads to a restaurant that had a giant dancing cow on the roof and a sign claiming they had the âworldâs best steak.â The cow wore a bikini and its udders were on full display, and for a moment, Ruby wondered if this was a weird exotic dancing place.
âHuh,â was all Ruby could think to say as Parker pulled into a dirt parking lot.
âYou just have to pretend the cowâs not there when you go inside. After that, itâs not so bad,â Parker said.
âWhat are you talking about?â Andy said from the back seat. âThe cow is the best part.â
Parker threw him a warning glance. âDude, youâre going to scare her off.â
Andy laughed and jumped out of the car before it had come to a complete stop.
Parker had been right. Ruby kept her gaze on the ground until they made it inside, and then it was a typical steakhouse. After they were seated, Ruby picked up what seemed to be only half of the menu, and she looked on the table for the rest.
âI think Iâm missing part of mine,â she told Parker, waving her menu.
âNo, thatâs the whole thing,â he said.
âBut thereâs nothing but steak on here. There arenât even side dishes or burgers or anything.â
âNope. The only way you get sides is if you order the steak,â Parker said.
Ruby stared at him. âThis place is seriously messed up.â
âDo you not like steak?â Parker asked, his brow wrinkled in concern.
Ruby glanced at Andy and Rafael, who were daring each other to get the biggest steak on the menu. âI figured theyâd have other stuff I could choose from,â she said quietly. âBut itâs fine. Iâll just choose the smallest one they have. Itâs not a big deal.â
âYeahâ¦their small steak is gigantic. Iâm sorry. I wish I would have known.â
Ruby wondered if sheâd made a mistake coming here. Parker had obviously planned the weekend as a boysâ trip, and she didnât want him worrying about her not enjoying herself. âNo, it will be great. I want you to do everything this weekend like you would have if I hadnât tagged along. Pretend Iâm not here.â
Parker chuckled. âYeah, thatâs going to be kind of hard to do.â
The way he said it made Ruby blush. And yet she liked itâuntil Clarkâs face popped into Rubyâs mind and she immediately felt a tidal wave of guilt. No matter what a good guy Parker was, no matter if Ruby was attracted to him, she couldnât allow anything to happen between them. She turned to Andy and Rafael in an attempt to shake off the unwanted feelings.
âHow did you two meet Parker?â
âCollege,â Rafael said. âHe put up a flier looking for a crew, and he found Andy and me.â He sized Andy up. âWorst mistake heâs ever made.â
Andy punched Rafael in the arm and they both laughed hysterically.
Ruby nodded, like what Rafael had said made any sense to her. âSoâ¦what does that mean? What do you guys do as Parkerâs crew?â
âAll the hard stuff,â Andy said.
