Tess was relieved when Melissa Wallace finally left the Crazy Horse Ranch in her compact car. Tess had remained where she wouldn’t accidentally confront the auburn-haired beauty when she departed.

After lunch, and for the remainder of the day, Tess avidly worked to avoid Justin Galloway as well. But her efforts proved futile when he sought her out at the end of office hours.

Tess was practicing with Commanche when Justin bypassed his luxury car and crossed to the corral. He watched her practice a moment, and his scrutiny caused Tess to feel clumsy and nervous. She felt a strange mix of giddy despair when he curtly motioned her to him.

Justin, who saw the look cross her face, felt a cold dash of despair well in the pit of his stomach.

Commanche snorted and tossed his head, skittering, as Tess reined him in across the rungs from Justin. His mirrored sunglasses protected his eyes from her searching gaze while tossing back to her a dwarfed reflection of herself astride her horse.

“Yes?” she questioned.

“I’ll be leaving now.” Justin presented her with the inconsequential news. “I’ll be back first thing in the morning. You have my number at the hotel, although I’ll look for quarters closer to the Crazy Horse.”

“Well. . .have a pleasant evening with the Wallaces.” Tess spoke the first feeble comment that came to mind. “I hope you enjoy yourself.”

“Thanks for your concern,” he murmured. “Somehow I hadn’t expected you to care if I enjoyed myself with the Wallaces or not. But, I’m sure I’ll have a wonderful time visiting old friends.”

“Beyond doubt you’ll have a marvelous evening.” Tess’s voice grew stiff. “Missy will see to that. . .”

“Surely you’re not jealous, Tess?!” Justin chided softly.

Tess gave Justin an indignant stare and her smoky eyes were cool as ashes. “Of course not! I’ve no idea what on earth would give you that idea.”

“Aw, shucks,” Justin drawled, sighing, as he snapped his fingers in an exaggerated gesture of disappointment. “And here I was—already hoping that you would be jealous—and that you were pining your little heart out to go out on the town with me this evening! Or wander over to the Lone Star to sample the t-bone steaks they advertise on the billboard along the highway.”

“Should I be jealous? I can think of no reason why,” she said in a light tone. “Anyway, perchance you have forgotten—you are obligated to dine with the Wallaces tonight. I thought you a man of your word.”

He gave a heavy sigh. “And right you are. I am otherwise occupied. And whatever you think of me, know that I am a man of my word. I don’t go back on a promise—for anything or anybody. Alas, Tess Trevor, not even for you. . .actually, maybe I was only testing you, Tess.” The impromptu explanation hung in the sudden silence making Tess feel upset and unsettled.

“Well, in the process you are making me feel exceptionally testy! I dislike being toyed with! Now, if you’ll excuse me!” Tess nudged
