Chapter 7. Practicing Mindfulness

There's no way that you could learn a new skill without any form of guidance or instruction. Imagine you're given the keys to a Ferrari, and you're asked to drive it in really heavy traffic, but you've never driven a day in your life. That would not work out well. The same thing applies when it comes to mindfulness. If it were simply a matter of telling you, "Go forth and be mindful," then I had better wrap up this book here because there's nothing else to do, I guess. Don't worry. I'm not going to leave you hanging.

At the core of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is mindfulness. What we're going to do is take a look at each of the steps you need to go through to practice mindfulness. It's not enough to know it can help you. I want to empower you with the knowledge you need to save yourself.

Now, you may be a tad skeptical of all of this. Perhaps more than a few times already, you have considered setting this book aside, because you find it inconceivable that simply learning mindfulness as a skill could be all you need to turn your life around. It's not unusual for BPD patients to be skeptical of the whole thing. For a problem as complex as BPD, how could anyone possibly even suggest something as simple and basic as mindfulness? What the heck does "mindfulness" even mean anyway? Full of mind? You're tempted to assume it's some religious hokey by Buddhists, and so you should not pay it any attention. There is no way all your problems could be resolved by simply breathing, you think. These are all logical thoughts.

It's natural to raise a brow in suspicion at the whole concept, especially when you have no idea what it really means to practice mindfulness, or how you would even begin in the first place.

Once you know what to do, it becomes easier for you to accept the idea. However, knowledge is not enough. Knowledge is not power. It's the application of the knowledge that will give you all the healing you seek. Just because you know the mechanics do not mean you really know how to work it. The only way to truly know is to practice what you do know. By practice, I do not mean you should try it once or twice. I mean, you should dedicate yourself to being consistent about your mindfulness practice. This is the only way you can truly reap the benefits and get better. It's not unlike working out. You don't expect one day at the gym to undo years of terrible dieting and a lazy lifestyle. You have to keep going regularly. You need to keep training the same muscles over and over again until they get better and stronger. To keep said muscles, you'll need to make working out a lifestyle. The same applies to mindfulness.

Most people who have BPD tend to resort to stopgap measures like cutting, reckless behavior, and other things like that.
