Chapter 7

It didn’t take long to find Adam. He was pacing in the lobby, running his hands through his hair in distress.

“Are you okay?” Clary asked, sitting down on one of the couches. He started when she spoke but shook his head when he saw who it was. Clary knew that there was no way that he was going to open up to her, but it was worth a try.

“I’m fine,” he said with a winning smile. “Just needed to get some air, you know? It’s stuffy in there.”

“I understand,” she nodded. “It must be stressful. You’re just trying to enjoy a party, but everyone’s asking questions. It’s not even the election yet, but you’ve got to defend your office from your own brother. I’m sorry, that can’t be pleasant. If it makes you feel better, I’ll probably vote for you.”

“Probably?” Adam asked with an amused smile, sitting down on one of the couches opposite her. “Great. I’ve got a whole bunch of nos, and one probably. Everything’s coming up Adam.”

“You’ve had a good run,” Clary teased, “maybe it’s time to give someone else a shot. Isn’t there something else you want to do? Scrapbooking? I’ve got a few books on the subject in my shop. I’m sure you’d be a natural. Forget being a mayor, you could be a fantastic scrapbooker.”

“There we go,” Adam said jokingly, “my whole future is planned. Drop the politics thing and join a scrapbooking club. Why didn’t I think about it before?”

“Yeah,” Clary asked, “why didn’t you?”

“I don’t think scrapbooking is going to get me a lot of respect,” Adam pointed out.

“No,” Clary shook her head. “I’m serious. Why not let someone else be mayor? From what I’ve seen tonight, it’s just stressful. Everyone’s always criticizing you, and you can’t even enjoy one party. Why not throw in the towel and focus on your businesses? No offense, but this is a thankless job.”

“I don’t do it for the thanks,” Adam admitted. “I love Valley Springs. It’s a good town. I grew up here, and I’ve just always loved it, you know? I thought that if I was mayor then I could do some good. And have, not that anyone sees the good. I don’t want to give this up.”

“I get it,” Clary said slowly, “you don’t want to give up this job. You think you can do a better job than Anthony?”

“Are you kidding?” Adam scoffed. “This is all a big joke to Anthony. He thinks that all he has to do is smile for the cameras. I can’t let him be my replacement. I understand if someone else wants to take over, and I’ll step down to a worthy candidate. But I won’t step down for Anthony. He’ll quit after a week, if he makes it that long.”

“Why’s he running then?” Clary asked frowning. “That’s a lot of commitment for one joke. Besides, he’s got his hands full with the news station and Natalie.”

“You’re telling me,” Adam shook his head. “He always had a thing for complicated women.
