Kelly led Harry to a shiny red Audi A4 and jumped behind the wheel.

“Nice car.” Harry admired the late-model coupe. There wasn’t a scratch on it. His wheels, a hand me down from his older sister, were a rust heap in comparison.

“Thanks. It’s one of the few things I kept from the marriage. Hop in.” Beyond the car and a few personal belongings, she had accepted a lump sum settlement from Alan and no alimony. The money had become her down payment on the inn—and her new life.

Harry pulled open the door and gaped. Trash, various makeup odds and ends of which he only recognized three as being lip gloss tubes and sand littered the sleek black leather sports seats. Ditto the floor. He stood there, unsure what to do.

“Hold on.” Kelly hastily shoved some of the garbage to the floorboard and tossed the rest over her shoulder to the backseat.

“Thanks.” Harry was still searching for the buckle of his seatbelt when Kelly surged out of the parking lot. She waved to her father standing at the edge of the inn, leaning on his crutch.

She got halfway down the block then hit the brakes.

Harry flew forward, throwing his hands against the dash. “What are you doing?”

“Dad might want to come.” She backed up quickly.

Her father hobbled up to the curb. “Kelly, what are you two up to?”

She ordered Harry to roll down his window. “We’re going to see Ruth. Want to come?”

Ben glanced at his wristwatch. “Now? We’re supposed to wait until this afternoon. The nurse on the phone said—”

Kelly gunned the engine. “I’d rather go now. Are you in or are you out?”

Ben shrugged at Harry. “I’m in.”

Harry moved to the rear seat and Kelly’s father hopped up front, settling his crutch between the seats.

They made it to the medical center in record time. Det. Nick Burns was spilling out from the automatic doors of the visitor’s entrance as Ben and Harry, mostly Ben with his broken leg, struggled to keep up with Kelly. She seemed determined to do everything in double-time, like a fast-forwarding video.

It was all Ben and Harry could do to keep her in their sight.

Kelly stepped in the detective’s path. “Det. Burns, what are you doing here?”

“A routine visit.” He ran the back of his hand along his damp forehead and then made a show of check his watch. “I am in a hurry. I’ve got court in less than an hour.”

“Wait,” pleaded Kelly. “How is my aunt?”

“She’s fine. Fragile. Resting comfortably.” The detective was wearing an unremarkable brown suit and clutching a worn black leather briefcase. He pinched his brows together, noting the concern on all three of their faces. “Is everything all right, Mrs. Green?”

“Yes.”

“We’re anxious to see my sister. I assume we can visit her now?” Ben Walsh tapped his crutch on the sidewalk impatiently.

“Sure. You can go right ahead, as far as I am concerned. Unless the staff tell you otherwise.”

“And Mrs. Evans is alert? Is she coherent?” Harry wanted to know.
