At the meeting on Thursday night, Bob kept trying to get them all settled and talking about the book he’d chosen, rather than socializing around the food.
“I’d say the sooner we settle down and talk about this here book, which I might remind you is what we do as the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society, the sooner we can get onto the important part of the meeting and try to solve Lizzie’s problem,” he finally said, exasperation making his voice much higher pitched than usual.
“Just calm yourself down, Bob,” Molly said, thrusting a plate of cheese straws at him, “or you’ll soon be asked to join Lizzie’s choir, as a soprano.”
The others laughed and Bob soon joined in. “All right, you’ve got yourself a point there, Molly. But so do I. Now then, I call this here book club meeting to order.” He looked over at Molly. “I can do that, can’t I?”
She nodded and sipped her tea. Everyone took their seats and waited for him to continue.
Lizzie let her gaze wander around the library, one of her favorite rooms in Molly’s house. She didn’t let her attention wander during her literacy classes held in the same room. But for now, she could enjoy the feel of old-world charm afforded by the three walls covered with dark oak bookcases. Two settees faced each other across an Oriental carpet, and three club chairs upholstered in burgundy velvet had been pulled up to either end. The elegance of the room was highlighted by brocade beige drapes, which were still open despite the fading light outside, and the sprawling lawn at the side of the house was visible through the large picture window.
“I first of all want to thank Stephanie for putting me onto this here book. I’d been looking for a new police procedural and she pulled this one off the shelves and said I oughta give it a try even though it wasn’t exactly what I had in mind. So, I did and I’m here to say, I’m going to read everything else the boy has put out. Okay, so what did y’all think about it?” Bob wanted to know. He eagerly searched the faces of everyone in the room.
Stephanie checked to make sure no one else was starting to speak, then said, “I know it isn’t a police procedural.” She smiled at Bob, looking apologetic. “But we do see the investigation through the eyes of the female police officer, Claire, at least part of the time. And what I like most about it is the details. I grew up in farming country and Brad Smith has sure got it right. I also really, really like Virgil Cain.”
Lizzie agreed. “There’s something really appealing about Virgil Cain, which is what we want in a main protagonist. He’s his own man, knows what’s important in his life and isn’t about to let his head get turned around by what’s going on in the movie world.”
“He also sounds really, really sexy in a quiet way,” Stephanie jumped in.
