CHAPTER SEVEN

They followed the bartender outside and he led them over to a small pickup truck parked in the corner of the parking lot. Gesturing at the vehicle with a deeply irritated expression, he said, “The idiot took a crowbar to my truck, then took off and I haven’t seen him since. If he doesn’t want me to involve the police, I need him to pay for the damages. Also, tell him he’s banned from Lake of Pints. He might be a regular here, but I’m done dealing with his crap.”

The damage to the truck was severe. There was a hole in the windshield with cracks spider webbing out from it, and the driver’s side window was completely smashed in. One of the headlights was broken and there were multiple dents in the hood and the grille.

“Mason did this?”

She was surprised, but also not. Mason was hot-headed and quick to anger. She could see him doing something like this if he got mad enough. Unfortunately, there was no way he was ever going to pay the bartender back for the damage. Not now.

“Eve,” Lucas muttered, touching her arm and nodding his head to direct her attention across the road.

“I can’t—” Eve cut her words off midsentence. She didn’t want to make a promise she couldn’t keep, but she also didn’t want to tell him the truth yet. The bartender seemed to take her uncertainty as reluctance and ran a hand through his short hair with a sigh.

“Look, you’re his friend, I get it. But it’s going to be better for him if he pays cash for the damage to my truck instead of me going through the police and his insurance. I just want the cost of repair covered, then I’ll drop it. And remember to tell him Paul said he’s banned from Lake of Pints. I’ve got to get back to work now. Who knew a power outage would be our busiest time of the year?”

With a distracted wave, he turned to go back inside. Eve and Lucas followed at a slower pace, exchanging a glance that told her he was wondering the same thing she was. Sheriff Larson thought Mason had been killed in a hit and run. So far, they had found not one, but two damaged vehicles owned by people who were unhappy with Mason.

She wasn’t sure if having too many suspects was any better than having none.

Eve ended up getting her food to go, because Lucas said he wanted to go home and think and
