"Tell me again why we're here?"

Behind the wheel of the black Lexus he had been babying since they arrived back in Florida, Duncan turned to study Wilcox, less than impressed.

"Do we have to go over this again?" he asked.

Wilcox flipped him the bird. "You're just tense because of this Blake girl. So someone is tipped off to our behind-the-scenes string pulling. So what? It's happened before. And we'll clear it up as always."

Duncan cast him a baleful glance. "She's a college girl. Some cute co-ed playing on the beach, and she put two and two together. Makes me feel like we're slipping. If I'm feeling that, chances are our Lupin's thinking the same."

"There's no reason for the controller to get involved," Wilcox said. "We've still got things under control."

"Do we?" Duncan asked grimly. "I hope you're right. You haven't been in this line of work as long as I have, Junior. You don't get to make too many mistakes."

With a sigh, Wilcox settled back into the soft leather passenger seat and stared out the windshield at the road that passed in front of them. The car was parked perpendicular to the road so that they could see every car that went by.

"I still don't understand why we don't just do a street- to-street," Wilcox said. "We did a trace-back on her name. We know what kind of car she rented. We've got the plate number and driver's license pictures of her and the Hawaiian girl. It would only be a matter of time, and at least we'd be doing something instead of just sitting here."

Duncan sighed and shook his head. "You're right. The island isn't that big. But visibility sucks. We could go street by street, house by house, hotel by hotel, and we could miss them easily. Now look out the windshield," Duncan said. "What do you see?"

"A road," his partner replied dully.

"The only road from Captiva Island onto Sanibel Island. Restaurants, shopping, wildlife, lots of athletic things to do. Captiva's got it all, but on a smaller scale. Chances are, they'll come this way soon enough. And when it comes time for them to go home to Boston, they have to drive on this road. We stay here long enough, they'll drive right by."

Wilcox sighed. "Food? The bathroom?"

"There's a restaurant half a mile away, and a convenience store as well. We're not going anywhere. You just have to trust me on this."

"You're driving," Wilcox admitted grudgingly.

Satisfied, Duncan took a long swig from a bottle of soda and sat back in the driver's seat to watch the road. A warm, humid breeze swept through the Lexus, but it felt nice.

Exactly eighteen minutes later, a hunter green Jeep Grand Cherokee passed by on the road with Jenna Blake behind the wheel and her roommate riding shotgun.

Wilcox swore under his breath. Duncan shot him an I-told-you-so grin and started the car. The engine roared as he pulled out onto the road, a quarter of a mile and a candy-apple red Volkswagen separating them from their objective.
