Chapter Seven
Too late, it occurred to Nora that she should have chosen pretty much anywhere besides Sunshine Smoothies for breakfast. One look at Reginaâs face when she saw Nora told her it was going to be an awkward exchange. Sheâd nearly made it through the entire encounter in a blessedâif not awkwardâsilence, only to be thwarted when she was halfway out the door.
âAbout that thing you said the other dayâ¦â Regina began hesitantly.
âThat he was gay?â Nora supplied, bordering on irritation.
âYes.â Regina frowned. âThat. Surely itâs all a misunderstanding.â
Not in the mood to argue it, Nora pressed her lips together briefly before conceding. âProbably. Thanks again for the smoothies, Regina. Have a good morning.â
She hated to break it to everyone, but they were going to have to take a hiatus from their smoothies for a bit. Nora needed a respite from the shopâs proprietor if nothing else. Besides, it was getting hard to juggle so many drinks now that her eclectic crew had grown.
Knowing Walterâs only objection to Leo had been out of consideration to Pru, who now had an office to hide in, Nora had given him permission to film an episode of his show in the shop. Partly because any exposure was good for the store at this point, and partly because he and August were so danged cute tripping over themselves when the other was around.
August was busy building a holiday display in the window, something that felt a bit odd since it was sunny and seventy-five outside. Granted, San Francisco wasnât exactly the arctic, but it had a respectable chill in the air by the time it was holiday season proper.
When August turned to set up the ladder, Nora caught a glimpse of her shirt and grinned. It read, âIâm not procrastinating, Iâm on a side quest.â
âHere,â Leo tripped over his own feet in his rush to get to Augustâs side, catching himself with a comedic little run. âLet me help.â
Nora scurried to the office to give Pru her smoothie before either of them could see her smile.
âIf you need me, Iâll be back here all day,â Pru said by way of greeting. âI just canât take all of that manâs pink today.â
âLeoâs voice is pink?â Nora wasnât sure what color she expected him to be, but that wasnât it.
âMore of a sangria.â
âThatâs a lovely color.â
âItâs a good accent color. Not something Iâd paint a room in.â
âDuly noted.â Nora set the drink down and backed quietly out of the office, closing the door behind her. She had so many questions about Prudenceâs condition, questions she was afraid to ask. She wasnât sure what the etiquette was for something like that. Still, she wondered if it was something sheâd been born with, or had it developed later in life? At what point had she realized the rest of the world didnât have a light display accompanying every sound?
Noraâs ponderings were interrupted by a sound so unexpected that it took her a moment to realize what it meant: The tinkling of the newly installed bell above the door signaled the arrival of a customer.
