During the late 1800s, men wore narrow pants and tall top hats to make themselves appear taller than they actually were.

Economists Nicola Persico and Andrew Postlewaite at the University of Pennsylvania and Dan Silverman at the University of Michigan reviewed numerous studies and found another factor contributing to higher incomes for tall males and females. The researchers note that “height at age sixteen uniquely influences future wages.” Why? The economists conclude that teenagers “who were relatively short when young, were less likely to participate in social activities associated with the accumulation of productive skills and attributes, and report lower self-esteem.” In other words, the short teens were not as likely to take part in athletic competitions, clubs, or dating as were their taller counterparts. Thus, the researchers conclude, lack of social skills and confidence “may be at the root of the disparity in wages across heights.”16
