CHAPTER FOURTEEN
“SHAUN’S HAD TO TAKE the car into the garage.” Lizzie sounded harassed when she called Megan with an update on her weekend travel plans. “Something to do with the clutch, so we’ll be late setting off, and late getting to you. It’s such a pain—I was hoping we could all have dinner together. You don’t have to wait up for us, though, okay?”
“Don’t worry about it,” said Megan. “And I’ll see how I feel. If I need matchsticks to keep my eyes open, I’ll go to bed, otherwise I’ll wait up till you get here.”
“Alright, but I’ll make breakfast in the morning. Deal?”
“Sounds perfect.”
“You’ll have to let me know what to do with the alarm, though, or it’ll go off and wake up the whole street,” said Lizzie.
Megan dropped her voice. “To be honest, I got a bit confused when Des was explaining it to me, so I’m not sure. He’s already showed me twice so I don’t want to ask him again. I’ll have another look at the instructions when I get back home, and Skype you. That way, I can show you what to do.”
“Okey-dokey,” said Lizzie. “I’ll see you later.”

Megan scratched her head. “Well, I’m sure that’s what Des told me to do. He came back here with me and ran through it all again. I don’t know why I can’t get it to work.”
At the other end of a Skype call, Lizzie was equally perplexed. “Have you read the instruction leaflet?”
“Yes, but it’s just gobbledegook to me.”
“Look, Shaun will know what to do—he’s good with stuff like that. Why don’t you leave the alarm off, just until we get there? If you leave the instruction leaflet on the kitchen table, I’ll ask him to take a look and set the alarm before we go to bed, and then he can show you how to do it before we leave in the morning. It’s not as though it’ll be off all night—just a few hours. I reckon we’ll be there between one and two. Anyway, I’d better go. See you soon.”
“Yeah, see you later.” Megan stretched her arms to the ceiling and yawned. She’d been looking forward to a good night’s sleep, in a full-sized bed, since Monday. “I’d better get you your dinner before I doze off,” she said to Cat, who opened an eye that followed her from the couch to the kitchen.
With Cat fed, and lacking inspiration for her own dinner, Megan opened a family-sized carton of raspberry yogurt which she proceeded to finish, standing up and looking out of the living room window at a game of bowls that was being played on the village green.
As Lizzie and Shaun weren’t due until much later, she rethought her plans for the evening and decided to have a very early night. It was still light after she’d soaked in a deep bubble bath but she was so tired, she didn’t envisage having any problems falling off to sleep.
