Chapter 11

Willow woke a half hour earlier than normal to fulfill her promise to walk Clover before going in to work. Only 11 more days and it’ll be a habit. The dog saw a rabbit and about pulled her arm out of its socket.

By the time she reached the coffee shop, she had a whole new diet plan in place. She had a sack lunch with her so she wouldn’t starve by the end of the day. She was going vegetarian. Or vegan. She couldn’t remember the difference.

Her smile was contagious as she walked into the kitchen.

Janie had a green smoothie ready for her boss. “Here, I told you I’d have breakfast ready for you. It’s got everything you need to get off to a healthy start. I’ve already sold six of these this morning. And they aren’t cheap.”

Willow took a drink. “Not too bad. It’s actually good. I was a little scared, I’ll admit it.”

“There’s a lot of fruit in it. That’s why it’s so pricey. The fruit sweetens it up and balances out the bitterness of the greens.”

“I think you’ve got a winner.”

“Did you walk Clover this morning?”

“Yes, I did. She about killed me.”

She put her lunch in the fridge, washed her hands, then went to check on inventory in the display case. She should have known Janie would have already filled it.

In the corner, Karla Mitchell was nursing a cup of coffee and a yogurt. The young woman didn’t seem to be too upset. She was texting and smiling. Willow walked to her table.

“Can I join you?”

Karla looked at the door. “I’m meeting someone…”

“Just for a couple of minutes. I just have a question to ask you.”

She nodded to the chair opposite her. “Go ahead.”

“How close are you and Daisy Fisher?”

Karla scowled. “We’re not. I don’t know how you got the idea we are.”

“Janie saw you two talking like you know each other well.”

“Oh, we know each other all right. But we’re not close.”

“Daisy said it was your idea for her to open the bookstore here in Turtle.”

Karla rolled her eyes. “Yeah, right. It was Flynn’s idea. She had a thing for him. They used to date before he fell in love with me. I guess he still felt responsible for her. I don’t know why. She’s such a daddy’s girl.”

“May I ask what color and brand of lipstick you use?”

“That’s a weird question. I don’t wear lipstick. I’m allergic.”

“Hmm, OK. Well, it would help the police chief out if you’d tell him the truth about where you were the night Flynn was murdered.”

A deep voice sounded behind Willow. “She was with me.”

Willow turned around to see John New Moon standing behind her.

How did I miss the bell? “I thought you both said you were alone? Did you concoct this story to provide each other with an alibi?”

“No. We didn’t kill him. After he stormed out of my parents’ house John caught up with me. I was walking, trying to clear my head.” She took his hand. “We knew instantly.
