Grace watched as her garage door slid open. It gave her a thrill to know she was the proud owner of this cottage. But before she could open the car door, Jamie and Kenzie were standing there, with cheek-splitting grins.

“Welcome home, Grace!” Kenzie and Jamie said together.

“Good flight?” Jamie asked.

Grace leaned her head out the window and laughed. “Can I get out of the car, please?”

Kenzie said, “Pop the trunk and I’ll grab your bags.”

Grace did as she asked and rolled up the window before shutting the car off. It was good to be home. The moment she was out of the car, her sisters pulled her into a bear hug.

She smiled. “Hey, be careful, you’re going to hug the stuffing right out of me.”

“We missed you, squirt,” Kenzie said. “It was weird—we were here and you were there.”

Jamie was nodding in agreement. “Let’s not vacation apart too often.”

Grace held them tight. “You do know your husbands may want to vacation without family, specifically your younger sister tagging along.”

Jamie stepped out of her arms. “Ha!” She smirked. “If he thinks he gets me all to himself all the time, we’ll be having a talk.”

Kenzie was studying Grace. “You don’t look any different.”

Grace was puzzled. “Why would I?”

Kenzie snorted. “Falling in love and all. I thought it might change you.”

“Who said anything about love? I just had a bit of fun. Nothing more.” She hoped her eyes wouldn’t betray the sadness she felt. Anxious to change the subject she linked arms with them. “Let’s forget about the luggage—you said something about wine and food?”

Jamie laughed. “We have plenty of wine to loosen your tongue so you’ll tell us everything that happened. You’ve been uncharacteristically silent.” She steered Grace through the kitchen and out the back door.

Grace’s mouth formed an O. Tears pricked her eyes. Her sisters had hung twinkling lights and placed potted flowers around the perimeter of the patio. The wrought-iron table was set with a platter of appetizers, three wine glasses and two bottles of red wine. “You didn’t need to do all of this.”

Jamie pointed Grace toward a chaise. “Have a seat. After the last few days, you needed a really nice welcome home.”

“I need to run inside. I’ll be right out.” Grace hurried into the house and kicked off her shoes. Her sisters were right, this was exactly what she needed. Time with them always helped her.

Grace freshened up and was walking through the kitchen when she stopped to listen to Kenzie and Jamie. She had to strain as their voices were low.

Jamie said, “I’d like to wring his neck.”

“I can’t believe Mrs. M’s nephew would turn out to be such a jerk. She’s so sweet, and didn’t she have a hand in raising him?”

“She did,” Jamie said, “but obviously he missed something to be so cavalier with the truth.”

Kenzie agreed. “Why do you think she wasn’t interested in Tait?”

Grace had heard enough. She pushed open the back door and saw the look on their faces. Pure guilt.
