I left Mom and Joseph downstairs and went up to shower and change for my date with Cole. As the suds of the shampoo ran down my body I thought about Cole. What would it feel like to have his hands on my bare skin? Iâd have liked to have waited a little longer, but I had the feeling tonight would be the night. I only hoped he wouldnât find me disappointing. It had been a long time since I was naked in front of a man. I sure as heck wasnât sixteen any longer.
Could I see myself living here?
Bethâs murder had shattered that idea. Iâd run off to college wondering if Iâd ever want to return. Everything about Logan Bend had reminded me of the heinous way Bethâs life had been taken. Everyone became a suspect in my mind. Being at college in Seattle had been a relief. Not everyone who walked past me on the sidewalk made me wonder if he or she were Bethâs killer. I didnât have to be the other Webster girl.
But now? Enough time had passed that I could see Logan Bend with fresh eyes. I liked what I saw. Not just the quaint, gentrified town of Logan Bend but one of its finest citizens, Cole Paisley.
I finished putting on my makeup and took a look at myself in the full-length mirror that hung on the back of my door. How many times had I looked at myself in this mirror? If it were one of those tablets that cascaded photographs, Iâd be able to see myself in every stage of my life. Now, a woman who had lived a lot of life stared back at me.
A few minutes before six, I heard the doorbell ring. I scurried down the stairs to answer. My stomach did the usual flutter at the sight of him standing on the porch holding two bouquets of pink tulips. âHi, come on in.â
He stooped to give me a peck on the cheek before handing me one of the bouquets wrapped in brown paper. âThis one is for you. The other is for your mom.â
I rose to my tiptoes to peck his mouth. âThank you.â Then, whispering, I said, âMy momâs boyfriendâs here.â
He raised his eyebrows in surprise but didnât have time to ask me any questions because Mom barreled out of the kitchen. Sheâd taken off her apron and changed into a nice pair of jeans and a cotton top.
âCole Paisley, let me look at you.â Mom held out her hands. âWhat a handsome young man you are.â
âThank you, Mrs. Webster. Itâs nice to see you again.â
âYou as well.â
From the kitchen came the sound of a champagne cork being popped. âMom and Joseph have invited us to have a glass of champagne before we go,â I said. âTheyâve been dating for six months.â
Mom made an impatient noise in her throat. âItâs the silliest thing. Celebrating a six-month anniversary.â
âI think itâs romantic,â I said.
âYou would,â Mom said.
