“You win,” I tell Maddy after having the most amazing pancake experience of my life. Who would have thought?

“I know.”

Everyone tried her idea and we all were pleasantly surprised how much we liked it. Unfortunately for Jax, Ian and I had to take turns feeding him because his hands were just too sore to hold his silverware. He was so embarrassed that his face was red the entire time that we ate, but surprisingly he didn’t leave. Normally when he gets flustered like that he would just go in his room and shut the door. I’m sure since Maddy is here he wanted to put on a brave face.

“I’m not putting it on a burger though,” I tease her and I’m relieved to see her smile so freely. I’m not an expert on trauma but I had expected her to be a little more scared or something this morning. I suppose everyone processes in their own way, so I shouldn’t judge but I am a little concerned it doesn’t seem like a big deal to her.

“That was one time!”

“Don’t worry about it, jackass over here likes to dip his pepperoni pizza in whipped topping,” Jax comments and I feel my face heat.

“That was a secret you were supposed to take to your grave!”

“Actually that kind of sounds good, the sweet and salty combo. I would try that,” Maddy says with a shrug.

“Yeah my girl here will try pretty much anything food wise at least once. Remember when I talked you into putting chocolate sauce on your chicken nuggets? That was fucking funny but you still ate them,” Regina says with a chuckle.

“I’m not wasting good chicken nuggets and it really wasn’t that bad, weird but I’d eat it again if I had to,” Maddy tells her.

“How long have you two lived together?” Ian asks, and I’m actually curious about that as well.

“Five glorious years since I found my little bird with a broken wing and nursed her back to the hot mess express you know and love today,” Regina teases, but you can see that she really cares for Maddy like family.

“How about you guys?”

“Well for three of us it’s been ten years? Ian is younger than us so he has only been around for seven I think. Unless I’m doing my math all wrong. Either way it’s been a while,” I tell them and Otto nods so I’m assuming that my math is close. He has always been better at it than me.

“We all went to high school together and our families hung out at the same parties. In order to survive those we became friends,” Ian says only flinching a little when he mentions family. Reaching under the table I pat his leg and he smiles at me, grabbing my hand and holding it for support.

“We met at a fund—” Regina starts but Maddy interrupts her.

“We should get going. We all have work tomorrow and I have really been a big enough burden on you guys. Thank you for saving me last night Jax and thank you for the meal Ian and the use of your room.
