âYou win,â I tell Maddy after having the most amazing pancake experience of my life. Who would have thought?
âI know.â
Everyone tried her idea and we all were pleasantly surprised how much we liked it. Unfortunately for Jax, Ian and I had to take turns feeding him because his hands were just too sore to hold his silverware. He was so embarrassed that his face was red the entire time that we ate, but surprisingly he didnât leave. Normally when he gets flustered like that he would just go in his room and shut the door. Iâm sure since Maddy is here he wanted to put on a brave face.
âIâm not putting it on a burger though,â I tease her and Iâm relieved to see her smile so freely. Iâm not an expert on trauma but I had expected her to be a little more scared or something this morning. I suppose everyone processes in their own way, so I shouldnât judge but I am a little concerned it doesnât seem like a big deal to her.
âThat was one time!â
âDonât worry about it, jackass over here likes to dip his pepperoni pizza in whipped topping,â Jax comments and I feel my face heat.
âThat was a secret you were supposed to take to your grave!â
âActually that kind of sounds good, the sweet and salty combo. I would try that,â Maddy says with a shrug.
âYeah my girl here will try pretty much anything food wise at least once. Remember when I talked you into putting chocolate sauce on your chicken nuggets? That was fucking funny but you still ate them,â Regina says with a chuckle.
âIâm not wasting good chicken nuggets and it really wasnât that bad, weird but Iâd eat it again if I had to,â Maddy tells her.
âHow long have you two lived together?â Ian asks, and Iâm actually curious about that as well.
âFive glorious years since I found my little bird with a broken wing and nursed her back to the hot mess express you know and love today,â Regina teases, but you can see that she really cares for Maddy like family.
âHow about you guys?â
âWell for three of us itâs been ten years? Ian is younger than us so he has only been around for seven I think. Unless Iâm doing my math all wrong. Either way itâs been a while,â I tell them and Otto nods so Iâm assuming that my math is close. He has always been better at it than me.
âWe all went to high school together and our families hung out at the same parties. In order to survive those we became friends,â Ian says only flinching a little when he mentions family. Reaching under the table I pat his leg and he smiles at me, grabbing my hand and holding it for support.
âWe met at a fundââ Regina starts but Maddy interrupts her.
âWe should get going. We all have work tomorrow and I have really been a big enough burden on you guys. Thank you for saving me last night Jax and thank you for the meal Ian and the use of your room.
