CHAPTER 11

CHAPTER TWELVE

“A re you okay?” Seth asked quietly, his eyes fixed on her cut. They were at the station.

“It’s just a scratch,” she assured him.

“I can’t believe you figured it all out,” Seth admired her.

“Hardly,” Olivia shook her head. “I was more invested in finding out what happened to my mom and I kind of stumbled over the truth in the process.”

“Every kid in the world believes their principal has killed a kid or two… but to think principal Campbell was actually capable of murder all these years is enough to give me nightmares for the next few weeks.”

Olivia chuckled, “I never want to set foot in that school again.”

“That makes two of us -” Seth’s voice cut as detective Opus seated himself on the bench next to Olivia.

“So, I guess you figured out the big scandal your mom was involved in,” Richard said with a smirk. “I see a lot of Lily in you. She had the same curious mind that fought for the truth. She became quite the amateur sleuth in town, always giving me a run for my money as a starting out police officer.”

“Why didn’t you just tell me?”

“I knew you would figure it out eventually,” Richard grinned at her. “I thought the process might somehow bring you a little closer to your mother.”

Olivia could not argue with him there.

“But now that you know, I need to offer you a word of advice. Your mother’s poking around caused her a lot of trouble with a lot of important people. I don’t think it was the kind of life she would have wanted for you.”

Olivia noticed Seth was paying attention too.

“You took down Vivian Campbell today, along with her daughter, two highly respected members of our society,” Richard continued. “I’m used to the hate, but I don’t think you are. Be careful, Olivia.”

And with that Richard hoisted himself off the bench and sidled down the corridor.

“And that look?” Olivia asked Seth who was glaring at her.

“He’s right, you know,” Seth agreed. “I don’t like the amount of digging around you do. It gets you into trouble and Richard or I might not always be there in time to save you.”

Olivia snorted, “I don’t need saving. And since when do you and Richard agree on things?”

“I’m serious,” Seth reprimanded her. “I care about you too much to see something happen to you. Today, it was just a cut,” he gestured to her arm, “but what if that cut had been round your neck?”

“Seth -”

“No, Olivia, you don’t understand,” Seth said, his fingers working her hand into his. “I can’t lose you, not for any reason. I need you in my life.”

Olivia found herself speechless as Seth shifted forward on the bench and planted a gentle kiss on her lips. It was not the most romantic kiss Olivia had ever experienced, especially given the surroundings, but it certainly was the one that kicked up the most butterflies.
