Chapter 19

At the infirmary, Desmond was sitting up and talking with one of the nurses. He smiled when he saw Jessica step inside.

“Well hey little girl, good to see you. And you brought a pretty friend I see.” He said as he looked over at Anna.

“Hi Desmond! You look like you’re doing better!”

“Yeah, starting to get some energy back. They said I can have solid foods in a day or so.”

“Cool! Hey! Where do the vampires hide out? Adam wants to know.”

Anna put her hand over her face, shaking her head. She knew she should have discussed this with her more before coming up there. Jessica has no filter at all.

“He does, does he? So he sent you to talk to me?” Desmond asked, looking to Anna, then back to Jessica.

“Yep! He sent me!”

“Look, Desmond,” Anna said. “I know for whatever reason you don’t like Adam. I get that. But you seem to care about Jess. The vampires were already after her. Now they are really going to be gunning for her. So if you care about her, you’ll help us. So we can protect her.”

“She can protect herself better than you realize, but I understand. I know where their nest is. At least where it used to be.”

“You think they moved it?” Anna asked.

“I have no idea. They kept me locked in that cellar for almost twenty years. They could have moved it a bunch since then.”

“Well where was it last?”

“Last place I knew of it was in the mines.”

“Mines? What mines?” Anna asked.

“How old are you? And what is your name anyway?”

“I’m Anna, and I’m nineteen. So what mines?”

“Well before you were born, there used to be an old copper mine outside the city. It hadn’t been in use for years. It was up in the hills about a mile or two past the city limits.”

“The city has expanded a lot over the last ten years or so. It might be closer,” Anna said. “Though I think I know where you’re talking about. It’s never been developed. Too many rocks and hills, but I think it’s all sealed off.”

“That’s probably it. There’s a mine shaft out there somewhere. The vampires kind of use it as their headquarters. I’ve never been in there though. I’ve been told its way underground. Like an ant colony.”

“My God,” she said.

“As far as the stories go, there are thousands of vampires down there. The ones we see are only a few. I guess they take turns sleeping, like hibernating. Eventually they will all wake up and come out, all at once. Then feed off us humans like cattle.”

“And you wanted to join them?” Anna said.

“I was young, angry, and foolish; I saw it as my revenge on the world. Guess they got the last laugh though. But if you guys are thinking of attacking there, I’m not sure how you’d do it. That mine is filled with tunnels and shafts. Plus there’ve been some small cave-ins over the years. That is if they’re even still there.
