The four-wheeler that Carter had driven was still idling and sitting on the path. Carter’s body was slouched over the handlebars with blood splattered and pooling. The whole thing had the look of an avant-garde sculpture meant to display the fragility of the human spirit or something inane like that.
I swallowed hard. It was repulsive to see. Horror scenes like this were not new to me, unfortunately. I didn’t want to grow accustomed to it. That scared me, becoming so used to the gore of death that it didn’t bother me. Death has to mean something, especially when it comes unnaturally.
Behind me, Carter’s misshapen head was in the middle of the path. I averted my eyes. When I laid out my trap, I hadn’t expected my clothesline to work that effectively. In fact, I purposefully set it low enough so that it would knock them off their ATVs. Stun them, yes. Break a bone or two, maybe. I never thought I’d be looking at the headless off-roader.
With 14 guys between me and Jess, there was a good chance I’d be looking at a lot more carnage. I was trying to decide the best course. The four-wheeler would be the quickest way to get to their camp, but it screamed it’s arrival across the quiet wood. As soon as Jimmy and Carter failed to check in, they would be waiting for the ATV to come racing through the trees.
I thought, not for the first time, that I sure wished Leo was here. He had the training to sneak in and get Jess with little effort. No choice, here. No one was here except me. I was also the only hope Jess had. I had to either go straight in or make a run for civilization and find the authorities.
I was tired, hungry, and overall, ready to get out of these woods. If there was a trail heading east from here, then I might be able to skirt around the camp and make a run for Tiptonville. Let some alphabet agency raid the camp.
Of course, I felt a knot in my stomach at that thought. Leaving Jess to these guys seemed unconscionable. Jimmy even said, that if this Kyle guy had her, she would probably wish she were dead. I didn’t like that. After losing Lisa to that bastard in Carina, I knew the scars that a villain like Kyle could inflict. If I had to die in the process, then I would save Jess from that.
After all, I did have 42 bullets in three guns, now that I had Jimmy’s Glock. Which meant, I could, in theory, shoot each of them three times.
I grabbed Carter by the shirt and dragged him off the four-wheeler. He had another Browning Hi-Power 9 mm in his waistband too. There must have been a sale on 9 mm ammunition when they started supplying the guards. The Browning had a full clip, too. Now, I could shoot each of them four times. My odds seemed to be improving, I thought.
