My back bubbled with the sweat that was soaking my shirt so it was sticking to my skin. The still, night air stifled my lungs. The prayer session was supposed to begin in a few minutes. There were about twenty teenagers gathering together. Several girls grouped together with tears streaming down their cheeks. The boys looked resolute and somber. Each one held a candle that would be lighted later in remembrance of Andrea Garrett.
Michelle and I stood on the outskirts of the crowd. I was scanning the throng of teenagers trying to identify the girl that was wallpapered on Andrea’s computer. Unfortunately, all the girls seemed to have been molded from a kit.
Grandpa was milling around with David Rose. They were most likely preparing an impromptu eulogy. Detective Jamerson had also arrived, but he was still sitting in his car attempting to remain obscure.
The only person I had not seen yet was Dillon. He called the house and talked to Michelle earlier, and I had not called him back. He told Michelle that he wanted to come tonight. I remembered what he said yesterday about not being able to get a ride. I wished I’d called him back now. In fact, I felt pretty guilty about it.
We had only arrived a few minutes earlier. I had taken Grandpa back to the church after our visit with the Garretts. He asked me what I found, and he probed at my ethics for going through other people’s things. I reminded him that I only searched Andrea Garrett’s room, and she was not around to complain.
Now I was burdened with the knowledge of the clandestine relationship my uncle was having. Glancing over at my grandfather, my mind pondered what he might say to the situation. Would his attitude remain Christian? The idea was moot as I had absolutely no intention of telling him. Although, what, if anything was I going to do with this tidbit still puzzled me.
Michelle could not continue to make me feel guilty for knowing it. Still, something needed to be done. Or so I continued to argue with myself. On the other hand, what business was it of mine? He is only an uncle by marriage to an aunt that I only barely know and rarely see. Of course, the end results could in all likelihood be disastrous for that family. I did like Michelle, and I like Michael. Nevertheless, I was not sure it was my concern, so, for now, it was shelved.
When I finally made it back to the house, I felt almost exhausted. I had been up since before the crack of dawn, and the afternoon shadows were growing long. I kicked my shoes off and drifted into a short nap in a matter of seconds.
I awoke a few minutes before four. My stomach was making loud groans to attract attention to the hunger pangs. I rolled out of the bed feeling much more refreshed. I found the house empty, and I took this moment to raid the kitchen.
