Later that same afternoon, a man wended his way through a home store in Yuma, hoping to avoid anyone he knew. He gathered the few things he needed: a cotton rope, a gas can, and a long-handled lighter. The articles he purchased were available in Mesquite, of course, but every checkout clerk in town knew him and might remember what he purchased.

He pulled out his checkbook, then thought better of it and put it back. He dug around in his wallet for the few dollars he needed, paid the woman, and took the receipt.

When he arrived at his car, he put the items in the trunk next to his earlier purchase from a party supply: a bag of large latex balloons.

He turned the air conditioner on full blast, as he settled into the compact. He hated the little Japanese vehicle. It felt like driving a lawn mower, but he had to admit it made great gas mileage, and right now, that was important. He navigated the trip to Yuma and back home with the needle on the gas gauge barely moving.
